Emma Watson at the HeForShe Campaign 2014 - Official UN Video by United Nations

What is the #HeforShe movement?

What does the hashtag #HeforShe mean? What does it mean to “deconstruct stereotypes?” Take a look at the foundations of this movement and how they are relevant for every member of society.

Follow this Process:

  1. Watch Emma Watson at HeforShe campaign 2014,The HeforShe story, HeforShe campaign video. If gender bias begins with us - it can end with us and HeforShe equality story, redefining masculinity in Jordan.

  2. Create a mindmap in groups of three with the hashtag #HeforShe at the centre. Stem from this any ideas you have gathered from the videos that explain what is is, who is involved, why it is important, and what it is asking people to do as a result of its widespread publicity.

  3. Brainstorm five of the most important values you believe this movement is inspired by. Once you’ve chosen your five values write a brief paragraph associated with each one that explains why society needs to follow each value in order to achieve gender equality.

  4. Summarise your five paragraphs into a presentation of any sort that you like. Be as creative as you wish: in the form of poster, podcast, video, newspaper article, leaflet, slideshow or speech. Present your summary, ensuring that the explanation behind your values is made clear.

  5. Take action and decide how you can incorporate using and following your chosen five values. How has your perception change of gender roles and expectation thanks to #HeforShe?

  6. Capture and share your presentation to inspire others.

Educator Notes

To provide further challenge:

  • Require groups to title their presentation “Deconstructing stereotypes” and research what this means and the ways in which HeforShe embodies this.

  • Get students to research the historical basis for gender discrimination.

To simplify:

  • Create the mindmap as a teacher led task with the entire class working collaboratively to share ideas for this task.

  • Once completed, then divide class into groups to choose their five values with inspiration from the shared mind map. Continue the tasks as per usual.
