Thank You and Farewell to Sange
At last Friday`s School Assembly, we acknowledged Sange's contribution to Browns Bay School. Sange has worked in our School Lunchroom for many years and by my calculations has seen over 2500 children pass through our doors. It is quite an achievement.
I thanked Sange for the work she has done, but more importantly for the way that she has worked, quietly, with high standards, kindly and always putting the children first.
We will farewell Sange at a Staff event near the end of this term. The Lunchroom will run in it's current manner until the end of this term and I will update you with more news in upcoming newsletters.
Mid Year Reports
As we implement the new Curriculum, like many schools, we are working hard to review our reporting to you so it is accurate, meaningful and relevant to you. We are still waiting for information from the Ministry about a new mandatory testing schedule and what their expectations are about how and when we report the new Curriculum to Parents.
At the start of next term, you will receive your child’s Mid Year Report. The Report will look the same as last year so that you can compare your child’s progress with previous years. I believe that this will be the best way to help you understand your child's progress and achievement, rather than having three different reports over the coming years.
Parent and Teacher Conferences will take place in Week 1 of next term. The information for bookings will be in next week`s newsletter.
Traffic Plea
Now that the weather has changed, we have again started receiving complaints from our neighbours. Please remember that we spend a lot of time apologising on your behalf when you park illegally and block traffic. Often our neighbours do not complain about being inconvenienced, they are genuinely concerned about the safety of our students.
Please do not;
Park in restricted areas marked by yellow lines
Park over the driveways of residents
Queue on the roads if you cannot find parking - drive around the block and try again
Please do;
Keep our students safe
Awhi Update
Understanding the importance of greeting each other and using kind words
Our Awhi lessons for the past two weeks have been helping students to understand the importance of greeting each other and using kind words. It’s been so lovely to walk around the school and to have students say hello and use our names. Their smiles say it all. Students are also showing an awareness that words matter. They can make someone feel good or they can make a person feel hurt. Staff and students are all working on choosing our words carefully. This makes for a more positive school environment and shows Manaakitanga, Respect.

Keeping Ourselves Safe Programme (KOS) (Please note change of timing for Term 3)
In Weeks 4-6 of Term 3, your child will be taking part in the ‘Keeping Ourselves Safe’ personal safety programme. This programme has been designed to provide children with the skills to cope in situations that might involve abuse.
It has three overall aims:
To recognise unsafe behaviours
To develop and strengthen skills children need to keep themselves safe
To support and encourage children to get help from caring adults
Keeping Ourselves Safe has been developed by the New Zealand Police. It will be taught by your child’s teacher, with help from a Police Education Officer as required.
To be successful, Keeping Ourselves Safe needs your help and support. Some homework activities will come home for you to work on with your child.
It is important that you participate as much as possible, so that you can reinforce the messages children are getting and help your child use their new skills with confidence.
A Parent Information Session is being held on Tuesday 17 June at 2.15pm. If you would like to attend complete the online form at:https://forms.gle/SHumVHveDB8YNAH76
We encourage you to view the programme online at:
ICAS Exams
Each year, Browns Bay School invites children from Years 4, 5 and 6 to sit the ICAS English, Digital Technologies, Maths and Science exams. This year, the Exams will be held in August and registration is now open.
If your child has sat an ICAS exam before, you will already have been sent an email with the registration information. If you haven’t received this but would like your child to take part, please contact Karen Cebalo karenc@brownsbay.school.nz . Please be aware though that the exams are very challenging with a good level of English required, and we do want to make sure all children feel successful in what may be their first external exam. The exams are all sat online in school time.
If you would like your child to borrow an old ICAS paper to get a better understanding of what the exams involve, please also contact Karen Cebalo with your child’s name, Year level, Room number and state an ICAS subject.
Lost Bike
This bike was found on the school grounds on the weekend. If it belongs to you, please collect it from the school office.
