Principal News

ANZAC Day

Thanks to Sarah Corbett for organising the school representation at the ANZAC commemoration. It was my first time at the Browns Bay commemoration and being part of the event felt very special.

Browns Bay School were represented by a number of students at the Anzac Day Parade on Friday 25 April.

A very big thank you to Theo, Lucy, Isla, Bini and Eileen for marching so proudly in their Browns Bay School uniform.

Thank you also to Theo and Isla for laying the wreath on behalf of the school.

The students represented the school brilliantly.

Building Work

Keeping on top of maintenance at a big site is an ongoing challenge. Remediation of the retaining wall at the Browns Bay Road school entrance was scheduled for later in the year, but as they had a small window of availability we moved quickly to get the work done. With increasing rainfall in Auckland it is great to have the work done before winter.

Weather permitting, the Contractor will be working onsite over the weekend, laying the new concrete path. All health and safety protocols will be followed but you may want to warn your children if they come to school on their own that the Browns Bay Road entrance will be closed for the rest of this week.

Teacher Only Day

Our Teacher Only Day this term is scheduled for Friday 30 May. This aligns with the other schools in our Community of Learning (Kahui Ako).

The Teacher Only Days were set aside by the Ministry of Education to support the introduction of the New Curriculum.

Important Information for Term 2

Staying on top of school information is always a challenge. Here are a few reminders;

Dropping off and Picking Up

  • Children should not be dropped off at school before 8.30am. Children must be supervised by an adult before this time in case of accidents.

  • At the end of the day all children should be collected by an adult or walk home. If a child is not collected by an adult by 3.10 they should come to the school office.

  • When the bell sounds at 3.30pm we ask that the grounds are cleared so the Property team can complete their work and teachers can work in quiet.

  • At the end of the day, there is no parking available in the pick up/drop-off zone until 3pm. Please do not queue on Masterton Road if there is no parking available. Please keep moving around the block, by which time most traffic has cleared.

  • Please do not park illegally anywhere around the school.

  • If you need to collect your child for an appointment during the day, please contact the school office. You will need to sign them out from the school office before they leave school.

Awhi Update

Manners and Respect

Welcome back to Term 2. We hope that you had a good break and are looking forward to another great term.

Our Awhi lessons continue to help build a positive school culture where we all understand the expectations and spot people making excellent choices.

This week’s lesson focusses on how we show manners and respect in the classroom. We encourage students to use our sharing (learning language) in class, as much as possible, and their home language in the playground, if they wish. We also want students to know that speaking both languages is important and valued. Next week, your children will be learning about lunch without packaging and the positive impact this can have on our environment. We encourage you to talk with your child about this and to find ways to reduce the number of packaged items in their lunchbox.

Thank you for your support.

A Student Displaying Our School Values

Kimora from Rm 30 received Trimper today for showing the school values of Respect (Manaakitanga), and Taking Responsibility (Takohanga) during our Whakatau yesterday.

Photolife Studios will be in the school on Wednesday 07 May to take the annual school photos. Both class and individual photos will be taken at the same time. All children will have an individual photo taken.

The children will have brought home a slip to be filled in and returned to the classroom teacher, or the school office if you would like sibling photos taken. These will be taken on Thursday 08 May.

When the photos are ready for printing the children will bring home a unique photo shoot key.

This key will need to be used by parents to view and purchase photos online.

Road Safety Heroes Travelwise Day

During Road Safety Week, students will learn to be safe on and around our roads. At the end of this week, on Friday 16 May, we will have our annual Road Safety Heroes Travelwise Day to thank those people who help to make our roads safer.

Feel welcome to add a splash of pink to your Road Safety Heroes costume because Friday, 16 May is also Pink Shirt Day. Pink Shirt Day aims to eliminate bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusion.

School Disco/Volunteers Needed

If you can help with the school discos, please complete the following Google form.

A reminder that parents are not allowed into the disco, (apart from parents of new children that have started this year), so if you are wanting to attend the Junior disco you will need to volunteer.

Baking Needed

If parents can help by baking cupcakes/home baking to sell at the discos, this would be fabulous. Please collect a box or two from the school office and hand your baking into the school office on the day of the disco, Friday 09 May.

Thank you!

The FOTS Team.
