Principal News

Board Elections

The School Board election process is well underway. By now, you should have received an email from Election Pilot informing you of the ways that you can stand in the upcoming Elections.

If you have missed the email, you can search your inbox for Election Pilot, and lookout for the logo displayed below.

If you have considered standing, but are unsure of the process or commitment, please reach out to me - teresab@brownsbay.school.nz. I am happy to talk you through what being a Board member at BBS involves and how you can support your kura.

Sports Assembly

Thank you to everyone who attended the sports assembly on Friday. At whole school assemblies we are not always able to celebrate achievements adequately. Cherie and Adele did a great job of organising the event and it was fantastic to see so many of our children playing and enjoying sports.

An important part of the assembly was acknowledging the coaches and managers who support the extra curricular sports events. We couldn't offer such great opportunities without your support.

Free Gift - 25 Minutes Free Time

In a world where we are all time poor, how amazing to be gifted a whole 25 minutes extra per week!

When our school bell goes at 3pm, it takes most children at least 4 minutes to organise themselves and get to the Pick Up Zone. That means if you arrive at 2.55pm to collect your child, you are waiting a total of 9 minutes a day! If you leave home 5 minutes later and arrive after 3pm you could easily save 25 minutes a week. As an added bonus, you wont have to queue and the traffic will move much more freely for everyone. Don't worry if it takes you a couple of days to change your timings - this offer is open for the entire time that your child attends our school.

School Reports Feedback

If you missed the opportunity to give feedback about your child's report in the newsletter last week there is still time. The survey is linked here and your feedback will help us to plan for changes.

Awhi Update

Taking Pride In Our School Uniform

We have some great Awhi lessons planned for this term which will help all of us to develop the skills we need to treat each other with Manaakitanga, respect and kindness.

Last week, students learned about what to do when they have a problem and who they can go to for help. This week, classes will be discussing why it’s important to treat others in the way that they wish to be treated. A little bit of kindness and considering other people’s feelings can go a long way.

Uniforms: We’ve noticed an increasing number of non-uniform items being worn to school recently so we will be focussing on the importance of Taking Pride in our Uniform. All students will learn about what is the correct uniform.  School uniform items can be purchased online from  Argyle. Tracksuit pants are not part of the school uniform. Socks and tights should only be plain navy blue, white or black. No patterns or stripes please. Navy blue, black or red plain coloured long sleeve tops can be worn under the school polo shirt

School staff will be looking for opportunities to praise students for wearing their correct uniform. Please help them by ensuring that they have the items they need. If there is an issue please let the classroom teacher know. Thank you for your support.

FOTS Discretionary Fund

The FOTS Discretionary Fund applications are now open for Round #2 2025. FOTS retain a percentage of their fundraising for community applications that benefit our students. Recently, they have funded additional classroom supplies, supported sports teams and purchased Netball hoops for the school. This is in addition to the money donated for the Astroturf.

By clicking this link, you can apply for discretionary funding. Applications need to be in by Friday 08 August.

A FOTS sub-committee will consider applications.

Thank you, Tanya Sheppard and the FOTS Committee.

Hamper Donations Wanted

Hamper donations wanted for our Beats By Bingo event in August. Kindly drop these off at the school office, or to your child`s classroom teacher.

Thank you.

The FOTS Team.

School Events

Travelwise Black & White Event

Our Black and White Travelwise Event will be held on Wednesday 06 August. All BBS students are encouraged to add a splash of black and white to their school uniform while using sustainable transport by walking, biking, scootering, parking and walking or taking the bus to school.

Each student who uses sustainable transport and adds a dash of black and white to their uniform will receive a strip of black or white paper from their teacher. Together, each class will use these strips of paper to make a black and white chain. They will then take their chain to the school hall, where all of the chains will be joined together.

Year 4-6 classes will then be invited to go to the hall and estimate how many students at BBS used sustainable transport. At our Week 5 Assembly, the Travelwise Team will announce which Senior class had the closest estimate. The winning Senior class and the Junior class that they have been matched with will win a pizza lunch!

The focus of this Black and White Travelwise Event is to encourage all students and BBS family members to use the pedestrian crossings near our school. You can help keep our students and families safe by using the designated crossings near our school. These crossings are supervised and marked to ensure everyone can cross the road safely, especially during busy pick-up and drop-off times. Encouraging children to use them helps build good safety habits and greatly reduces the risk of accidents in high-traffic areas around the school.

Star Student

Agnes from Rm 26 recently took part in the Auckland FC mascot drawing competition and her design has been chosen as the final winner!

They’ll now be creating the club’s new mascot based on her drawing, which is incredibly exciting.

Agnes chose to draw a Kingfisher. It’s a bird that is native to New Zealand which she thought would represent Auckland’s spirit and speed — and also because it’s small but strong and quick, which she felt made it a good symbol for the team.

She was invited to appear on the Breakfast TV show together with the Auckland FC CEO to talk about her design. Well done Agnes!

Here is her winning design:
