Principal News

Good in the Hood

What a treat it was to see our students shine on stage last week in our School Production. Their hard work, passion, and talent were truly on display, and the show was entertaining and a huge success.

The Production would not have been possible without the dedication of so many in our school community - I call it Team Browns Bay. I want to extend a huge thank you to our incredible teachers, who gave up countless lunchtimes to rehearse, guide and encourage the children. Their commitment goes above and beyond, and it truly shows in the confidence our students displayed on stage.

A heartfelt thank you also goes to you. Your support was invaluable, whether it was helping with hair and make up, sourcing costumes or practicing lines at home. The seamless teamwork between staff, students and parents created a show we can all be proud of.

The students learned invaluable lessons about collaboration, teamwork, and resilience. We are so proud of every one of them for their effort. It was a wonderful celebration of creativity and community spirit. Thank you again for all of your support!

Sorting School Problems

We know that children sometimes discuss problems they are experiencing at school with you. If this does happen, please reach out to us - we are always here to help and support.

The best way to get that help is to email your child's teacher. The teacher will pass the issue to a senior leader or me if the problem is too big for them to resolve in a busy day of teaching.

If you prefer, you can email tanyas@brownsbay.school.nz (for children in Years 0-3) or joh@brownsbay.school.nz (for children in Years 4-6).

Please do not put messages on WeChat or any other platforms that name children or discuss the issue.

Below is some information that we share with students about what constitutes bullying. Being rude and being mean are not OK, and we will always work to resolve that when it happens.

Board Elections

Voting in our Board elections closes at 4pm today. Thank you to everyone who stood. It means a great deal to us that we have such dedicated Browns Bay School supporters.

If you have submitted a postal vote, that will be forwarded to the Returning Officer. To allow for postal votes to be counted, the election results will not be announced until next week.

The Returning Officer has informed us that the Declaration of Results will be sent to school contacts and all candidates, (both successful and unsuccessful), by email as soon as possible after votes have been counted.  They expect to send this out on Tuesday 16 September, but are unable to provide a specific time this will be released.  The new Board will take office on Wednesday 17 September, as required by Schedule 23, Section 8(1) of the Education and Training Act 2020.

The end of the year will be a time to formally thank our outgoing Board for all of their hard work and for leaving the school financially secure and in great shape.

Awhi Update

Assembly Success

Assemblies are a special time in our school. It gives students the opportunity to share some of their learning and for us to celebrate their achievements. We want everyone attending our assemblies to know how to show Manaakitanga/Respect and Tu Rangatira/Personal Excellence to the presenters and certificate recipients. This week’s lesson therefore focuses on assembly expectations. We look forward to spotting students making great choices in our assemblies next week.

Life Education

A visit from the Life Education Mobile Classroom has been arranged for our students.  The classroom will be onsite from 13 October for 3 weeks. The Life Education programme encourages children to adopt a healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on the things children can do to look after themselves. It aims to help children develop respect, understanding and appreciation of the human body. A Life Education Trust educator, Charlie Pollard, will work with us to teach some of those important health ideas.  The sophisticated technology and equipment of the Life Education programme supplements and extends the resources that we can offer the children.

More information was sent out to parents this week.

School Events

School Production

Just like that, our BBS Production for 2025 is over! We started work towards this

project with our ‘Reveal’ in Week 6 of Term 2 and then moved into auditions and

casting before the end of Term. This Term has been a concentrated effort by

everyone involved to learn, rehearse, costume and bring our story to the stage.

Each week has seen workshops for all our drama, dance and instrumental

performance groups, while our visual art group worked towards setting the scene with their foyer display. Lunchtimes have been used for extra rehearsals, costume checks and gathering props.

Our students have amazed us with their willingness to learn so much in a relatively short time. They have developed their skills in collaboration, time management and personal organisation as they honed their performance skills throughout the term.

Last week it all came together for three performances which were so successful. It was such a thrill to see our BBS students present ‘Good in the Hood’ to you all.

Thank you to every parent who helped us along the way. We are very grateful.

Celebrating Learning Support Day

Ngā Aukaha Learning Support Day 2025 was on Friday. It was a day to celebrate and show appreciation for the learning support kaimahi (workers) who support students with their learning needs. People are encouraged to wear purple and join in the celebrations to recognise the mahi of these vital staff members. Please see in Community Notices below a petition to back our future. Your support for our Staff and the future of Education is needed. The link can be found here.
