Production Update
Our Year 5-6 students are busy rehearsing for the upcoming school production "Good in the Hood." The children are working hard putting the scenes together, practising music compositions and dances, and getting art work ready. A production is a great Browns Bay School tradition and we are looking forward to another great show this year.
Advertising will start soon and tickets for the event will be available on Kindo. Parents of children in the Senior school are offered tickets first, and they will be available for other members of the school community in the following weeks.
Staying Well
At the moment we are in the peak season for sickness at school. At school we try and play our part by keeping our classrooms well ventilated and ensuring that children get plenty of fresh air during the day.
We often notice at this time of year that children feel extra tired. Getting enough sleep is vital for children’s learning, behaviour and overall wellbeing. At Primary school age, most children need around 9–11 hours of sleep each night to be ready for a full day of activities and learning. A consistent bedtime helps children settle more easily, wake up refreshed, and focus better in class. Tired children can find it harder to concentrate, manage their emotions and enjoy school.
We encourage families to set up a calm bedtime routine—turning off screens at least an hour before bed, reading a book together and making sure bedrooms are quiet and comfortable. Even 30 minutes of extra sleep can make a big difference to your child’s mood and learning the next day.
By working together to ensure children get the rest they need, we give them the best chance to succeed, grow and thrive at school.

BBS 2025 Math-A-Thon
Congratulations everyone on another great Math-A-Thon week!
We had fun with estimation questions, including estimating how far Mrs Burn could throw a gumboot!
We have 1 more week to go!
You still have time to create your own fundraising site and share it with friends and family. We are raising money for some wonderful upgrades to our school playgrounds.
Scan the QR code below and follow the prompts.
Congratulations to all last week’s prize draw winners, and especially to Ezra from Room 32 who won our major prize, some ear buds!
We have one more prize draw this Friday for anyone who has created a fundraising site and collected some sponsorship.
The Math-A-Thon test will take place this Friday!
We also have 3 major prizes for the students who raise the most money.
First prize – Rainbows End Super Pass for 2 adults and 2 children - this includes entry and rides
Second prize - $100 Westfield voucher, and Third prize - $50 Westfield voucher
There will also be a class incentive - pizza lunch for the 2 classes with the best participation (worked out on a class average).
Major prizes will be awarded at the School Assembly in Week 10.
Thank you everyone for all your help with the Math-A-Thon!

Travelwise Black & White Event
It was wonderful to see so many students at BBS add a splash of black and white to their school uniform while using sustainable transport on our Black and White Travelwise Day. They greatly enjoyed meeting the Travelwise Zebra at our Masterton Road Crossing.
Our Travelwise team took great pride in promoting sustainable transport within our school and wider community.
A whopping 495 students used sustainable transport — a fantastic outcome for our school community.
Each class created a black and white paper chain to visually represent the number of students in their class who travelled sustainably. These were joined together into one long chain and presented to the Senior classes. Students were given 10 seconds to estimate the total number represented. The Senior class with the closest estimate — along with a matched Junior buddy class — will receive a pizza lunch prize. The prize winners will be announced at our next Whole School Assembly. (See our Photo Gallery below for more photos).
Awhi Update
Different ways we can help each other
For the next two weeks, your children will be learning about the different ways that we can help each other. These come under the school values of Takohanga, Taking Responsibility, and Tū Rangatira, Personal Excellence. This week’s lesson focuses on the importance of taking turns and positive ways to co-operate with others.
Next week, we will explore the difference between tattling and telling. It is important to tell when someone needs help, when it’s not a kid sized problem that you can solve yourself or if someone is in danger. We will be encouraging all students and staff to follow this advice:
Before you speak, THINK:
Is it true?
Is it helpful?
Is it necessary?
Is it kind?
By stopping and thinking, we hope that our classrooms and playgrounds are great places to be.

Jojo and Nathan from Room 32 were noticed displaying our school values this week 😀
