Principal News

It has been a busy time preparing for building work to be done over the upcoming summer break. I am sorry that many areas of the school grounds and pool will not be available during the holidays, but the work is essential and will significantly improve the grounds for our children.

Roof Replacement Rooms 1-7

Unfortunately, during the tender process, asbestos was found in the ceiling cavity of Rooms 1-7. This is currently sealed and is of no danger, but the asbestos will need to be removed before the work on the roof replacement can begin. The preparation work for this will begin as soon as school is finished.

The buildings will be wrapped so that removal of the asbestos can begin. Work on the removal of asbestos should begin before Christmas but this will depend on the availability of the contractors. The removal will be completed before Term 1 starts in 2025, but it is unlikely that the re-roofing project will be complete by then.

For the first 4 weeks of Term 1, our Room 1-7 classes will be relocated to other spaces in the school. We will keep you informed of this in the class placement information later this term. If everything goes to plan, children will be able to move back to their classrooms after this, but we do have contingency plans in place if the project is extended.

All staff are working hard to manage this unfortunate situation and we will keep you updated.

Courts Upgrade

As we shared earlier this year, the courts outside the Year 3 classes are being upgraded with Astroturf and new Netball and Basketball hoops.

Work on this project should also begin as soon as school finishes. Before Christmas, work will begin on the base. The team will be back on 06 January to begin laying the new turf. They expect to be onsite for 2 weeks.

Pool Repairs and Painting

The pool will be emptied as soon as school finishes so that work can begin on 06 January. This project involves stripping back the current surfaces, repairing cracks and then applying several coats of sealer and paint.

We have been advised that the work should take 10 days to complete, but we should allow a period of 4 weeks to allow for weather conditions.

The pool should be ready for the start of school, but as with all of these projects we are at the mercy of the weather, contractors and no nasty surprises being discovered along the way.

We will open the pool as soon as possible and will offer you the opportunity to hire a key to the pool during Term 1. (Details can be found below).

Pool Key Hire

We will do our best to have the pool open from Thursday 06 February 2025 for the use of our BBS families. This is dependent on work being completed and the pool being refilled, brought up to temperature and chemical treatments working effectively.

We will soon be taking pre-orders for pool cards. There is a $110 fee for a pool card which gives you the use of the pool facilities for the Term 1 period. This includes a $50 bond which will be refunded upon the return of the pool card at the end of the season. We have taken into consideration the rising costs of chemicals and additional staffing needed to maintain the pool while it is hired out and the hire fee has been reduced to $60.

Further information and agreement forms will be sent home to families early next week. Please return your completed agreement form to the school office and make payment on Kindo to secure your pool card. All forms returned by Friday 13 December will receive their cards on Wednesday 05 February 2025.

Random Acts of Kindness

It was great to hear about students doing random acts of kindness over the past week or so. They make everyone feel good. We’d love for this to continue to the end of term and throughout the holidays.

Our final lesson for 2024 is a new initiative which we hope will help your children to know what to expect as they transition into their new year level. Each year group team has created a lesson about “The day in the life of..” a Year 4 student etc. The lesson will be done while students meet their new teachers and classmates later this term. We’re hoping that it’s a positive experience. Thank you for your support this year.

Mathletics Achievements

The Mathletics Team have advised us that 3 of our students have achieved the complete ‘Legend’ status in their Mathletics certificates – a huge achievement that takes commitment and dedication to get to this point in a single school year!

They`ve created a very short video for us which highlights some of our school’s achievements. Click the following link to view:

Bikes and Scooters

We are so pleased that so many Year 5 and Year 6 students have taken up the opportunity to get a bike licence. These students have been provided with a High-Vis vest and can travel to school independently on their bikes. In the past few weeks, spot prizes have been given out to students spotted travelling to and from school by bike. This week, our lovely Year 5 students were the lucky winners! They received an awesome Travelwise water bottle.

Year 4 Bulldogs Miniball Team Success

Congratulations to our Year 4 Bulldogs Miniball team who have been undefeated all year. They moved from the Local competition to the North Harbour competition for Semester 2 and were recent winners of the Year 4 section. A huge achievement! Congratulations to all the players, Coach Luka Topic and Manager Kirsten Billinghurst, along with all their supporters.

Chinese Traditional Dance Group

BBS is so fortunate to now have a Chinese Traditional Dance Group, thanks to the expertise and dedication of one of our parents, Jessey Song. The children are learning more about Chinese cultural traditions through dance. This has long been a dream of Jessey's and, with help from Mrs Cebalo and Cecilia and of course the support of our lovely school, we finally formed our own dance team. Thanks to a FOTS grant, they have been able to purchase beautiful, authentic costumes from China too.

The dancers are Meilun, Eileen, Felicia, Celine, Nicole, Margarita, Stephanie, Gloria and Sophia. The girls have devoted every Thursday lunchtime to practicing for the past two terms. They will perform one of the dances they have learned at Jingle.
