Safety Around The School
Closing the Drop Off/Pick Up Zone was a trial to try to improve safety around the school. Queueing traffic on Masterton Road had repercussions around the area and impacted public transport. The trial has been successful in easing those issues.
We will continue with the trial next week. As usual, someone will be in the Drop Off/Pick Up Zone, making sure that children are collected safely. If you are running a few minutes late, please don't panic.
If you know that it takes your child a few minutes to reach the pick up area you are welcome to wait until 3.05pm to collect them. This helps to keep the traffic flowing.
School Lunchroom
After over 20 years supporting our school by running the Lunchroom, Sange has decided to spend more time with family and explore new opportunities. She will be leaving Browns Bay School at the end of Term 1 next year. Nearer the time we will thank Sange properly for the huge contribution she has made to the Browns Bay School Community.
I know that the Lunchroom is something that the community values and we would like to continue to offer a similar service moving forward. Sange works very flexibly and I know we will be very lucky to find someone who will be able to be as flexible as she has been. With that in mind, I am open to some creative thinking about what the Lunchroom could look like moving forward. It could be pared down to be a more manageable menu with different options to Ezlunch or be run as part of an existing business.
If you have an interest in working with us to provide healthy, convenient and cost effective lunches I would love to hear from you. Please email:teresab@brownsbay.school.nz
Awhi Update
We hope that you enjoyed an extra day of family time over the long weekend. Itâs been excellent to see so many school hats being worn while children are outside. Thank you for supporting this. Our Awhi lessons go a little deeper over the next two weeks. This weekâs lesson teaches us the importance of having a âcan-doâ attitude.
One of the messages we love in this lesson is, âI am learning that when I believe I can do something, I usually can.â This is something that we as educators and parents want our learners to know. Failure is often seen in a negative light yet we know the importance of âfailingâ at something in order to develop resilience, perseverance and a growth mindset. These are skills that we all need throughout our lives. Next weekâs lesson encourages students to explore how being organised and taking responsibility for ourselves and our belongings helps our learning. We encourage you to share ways that you are organised with your children and how it helps you. Many thanks.

"What`s Your Speed?"
The Travelwise Team met with our Travelwise Representatives and conducted a âWhatâs Your Speed?â activity. The Travelwise Team excitedly put on their High-Vis vests, were given instructions on how to use a speed camera and then went out to check the speed of vehicles coming towards the Zebra Crossing on Browns Bay Road. They were so pleased to see that the large majority of drivers made sure that they abided by the speed limit.

Year 4 MOTAT Trip
The Year 4 students visited MOTAT (Museum of Transport and Technology), where they had a very enjoyable day with so much to see and do.
"We rode a real tram! It was exciting because we got to see how people used to travel a long time ago. The tram was old but still worked well. It made us feel like we were living in the past. We went to the Hands-On Science and Technology Exhibition, where we got to play with so many interesting gadgets. We learned how different machines work, and there were even puzzles we could solve.
We visited the MOTAT village. The village showed us what life was like in New Zealand a long time ago. There were old houses and shops, and we could see how people used to live without modern things like Smartphones. We also visited the Make Music Exhibition, where we could create our own music using different instruments. It was so much fun!
One of the most popular places we visited was the Telecommunication Centre. Everyone loved it because we learned how people communicated without phones or the Internet. We even saw old telephones and radios!
All of the classes had a classroom session where we learned about the history of Aotearoa (New Zealand). We learned a lot about the MÄori people and how they lived in the past. The best part was when we got to touch real artifacts, like tools and weapons. It helped us understand how hard life was for the MÄori people before modern technology".
Korean and Mandarin Speech Competitions
We have some incredibly talented students in our school who are not only confident in English but who also have the skills to present a formal speech in their home language. Browns Bay School held a Mandarin speech competition and a Korean speech competition for Year 5 and 6 students earlier this Term. We are very proud of these students who all presented their speeches so well:
KOREAN:
1st Place: Soonsoo Kim (25)
2nd Place: Ari Jinn (27)
3rd Place: Elynn Song (20)
Participation: Yuni Kim (21)
MANDARIN:
1st Place: Lucas Zhang (25)
2nd Place: Howard Zhang (24)
Highly Commended: Austin Liu (26), Bruce Liu (24), Hilary Lan (21), Celia Hu (26)
Participation: Rocky Meng (26), Jerry Luo (26), Meilun Song (19), Phoenix Song (20)
INTERSCHOOL SPEECH FINALS: The students who achieved 1st Place will represent our school at the Oneroa and Mid-Bays KÄhui Ako finals next week. The runners up will also be able to attend the finals with their families.
Lucas Zhang will represent BBS at the Mandarin finals with his speech on 'Being Resilient'. The runner up, if Lucas is unable to attend, will be Howard Zhang with his speech titled 'Dancing in the swimming pool'.
Soonsoo Kim will represent BBS at the Korean finals with her speech on 'Pokarekare Ana' and its significance to Korean people. The Korean runner up is Elynn Song with her speech on 'Hedgehogs'.
Congratulations to all of our speakers, and wishing Lucas and Soonsoo the very best of luck at the finals.
