Travelwise
For the remainder of this term we are having a focus on keeping everyone safe around our school. Starting next week, a group of students will be supporting this work by counting some of the traffic. This means we can collect some hard data and measure our improvement. Please be respectful of the students.
Next week, we ask that you make one small commitment that helps us to keep everyone safe around the school gates;
Always use one of the marked crossings. It is important when you are with your children and when you are on your own to model safe practices.
Never drop your children off while your car is parked on a yellow line. This includes the first part of the drop off zone on Masterton Road.
Never do a U-turn in the road after you have dropped off your child. This holds up all other traffic and has a big impact on everyone else. Our Road Patrollers are trained not to put the signs out while someone is doing a U-turn.
Always ensure that your child exits your car on the path side - not the road side.
Please do not use the staff car park. There are sometimes spaces, but it is not safe to enter and exit the car park at pick up and drop off times.
Our Travelwise week is a great time to see some of the benefits of your child walking to school. If your child loves walking and you can commit to even one day a week, it will make a huge difference to everyone.
In the next newsletter there will be a chance to share your ideas and practical solutions.

Thank you to our amazing FOTS team for a wonderful Read-A-Thon. I am working on the final details of the Courts project and we are looking forward to returning in February with a brand new Astroturf. Thanks to all who raised money for the school.

Book Week/Book Character Day and Dress Up Parade
Week 4 was Book Week and what a fabulous week it was! As well as the competitions in the library each lunchtime, we enjoyed book quizzes, listening to lunchtime storytime in English, Korean and Chinese, having a different teacher visit our classrooms everyday for more stories and visiting the Book Fair.
We finished our magnificent Read-A-Thon with our Book Character Parade where everybody dressed up as their favourite book character and looked amazing - Geronimo Stilton even came to visit!
A big thank you to all that helped during the week, but, especially to the FOTS Team who manned the Bookfair before and after school everyday. We couldn't have done it without you!
Thank you to local author Chris Sanders, who donated his time to entertain Year 0 to Year 4. The children really enjoyed your performances.
We raised over $1000 in rewards to buy lots of new books for our library! A big thank you to our Browns Bay School community for supporting us!!
Take a look at some of the wonderful costumes in our Gallery at the bottom of the newsletter).
Barefooted NZ with Year 3
The Year 3 students had the opportunity to spend some time with Harry Scott from Barefooted NZ. With the focus on Kites and Flight, Harry helped the students make and fly their own paper kites. There was much excitement flying them on the school field. Harry also worked with each class to make traditional MÄori Kites out of Palm Tree fronds. This was the launch of our Flight and Kites inquiry. The children gained new knowledge about the history of traditional Maori kites and the significance of using harakeke. Thank you Harry for the opportunity and the learning that took place over the two days. The children loved the experience.
You can find Harry at the weekends as part of the Councilās free Parks Out and About in Auckland. Follow him on Facebook to see the next event.
Year 5 and 6 Rippa/Tackle Tournament
Four Y5/6 Rippa Rugby teams and one Tackle Rugby team took part in the North Harbour Rugby Tournament at Windsor Park last week.
While some players were already accomplished players, others experienced the game for the first time. So much fun was had by all, along with some very pleasing results on the field.
A huge thank you must be given to the parents who ran the teams on the day, along with the parents who transported all the students to and from the event. We can only participate in days like this with everyone`s support.
Snow Sports Nationals
Austin (Rm 30), Year 3, has been participating in a number of snow events and competitions lately.
He participated in the Cardrona Junior Interfield ( Ski Slalom) on 28 July 2024, where he got a first place and a second place for his two races (Under 8 group).
He also participated in the 2024 National Junior Schools Ski Champs where he had great results. Students compete for their schools from all over New Zealand. There were 21 schools represented. Schools are ranked based on their top 4 place getters. As Austin was the only competitor from Browns Bay School it was hard to place highly against schools with numerous competitors, however, Austinās results placed him as the 2nd school!!
Austin then competed at the Auckland Primary/Intermediate Snow Sports Champs at Snow Planet where he placed second in the Y3/4 Freestyle-Ski Competition. Well done Austin on these great achievements.
Taekwondo National Championships
Lui, Eileen and Yuni won the 2024 NZ National Championships, Kukkiwon Cup in Taekwondo Competition on Saturday:
Lui (Rm26) Age 9-11 Male under 42kg Kyorugi Gold Medal
Eileen (Rm20) Minor (11 years and under) Female Poomsae Individual Bronze /
Minor (11 years and under) Female Poomsae Pair Gold
Yuni (Rm21) Minor (11 years and under) Female Poomsae Individual Silver /
Minor (11 years and under) Female Poomsae Pair Gold
Well done!!
Netball Hoops
A huge thank you must go to the school FOTS Team for the assistance in replacing our broken Netball posts with new reversible height posts in both our Junior and Senior playgrounds. We would like to ask the Whole School Community to support us by not allowing anyone to climb or swing off these hoops, reminding anyone seen doing this to please stop, so that we can keep these valuable resources useable.
Maths Week
Dear Parents
As some of you may know we have been celebrating Maths week this year from the 12th - 16th August.
We have been doing some fun Maths activities at school, including daily puzzles and riddles on the school Today Notices. We would like to include our community and families too by sharing a little game called Salute.
It is a great game to practice those addition facts but why not subtract the numbers or multiply them together as well for a bit of an extension.
Have a bit of fun and try it with your family.
Enjoy
The Maths team
