School Production

We are excited to announce the dates of the next BBS School Production. We have a long history of Productions that are held every two years, involving students from Years 5 and 6.

The dates for the Production are;

  • Tuesday 2nd September

  • Wednesday 3rd September

  • Thursday 4th September

The dates are on our School Calendar - you can sign up for the calendar here.

In the coming weeks, we will be holding auditions and will have a rehearsal schedule mapped out for Weeks 1-7 next term.

We always rely on support from the community to put on great events. In the coming weeks we will shout out for volunteers, but in the meantime, if you know someone who would be interested in supporting the event with sponsorship, please email teresab@brownsbay.school.nz

School Board Elections

The last School Board Elections were held in 2022. Members who were elected at that point serve a 3 year term. Some Board members choose to stand again but as their own children get older it is natural for them not to re-stand.

School Board members are active leaders in our schools. They have an important role of supporting strong professional leadership and ensuring effective teaching for all students through informed governance.

Parents, caregivers and people in the wider community can be Parent Representatives. School Boards need to represent the diversity of their school communities to ensure a bright future for all of our children.

Every Board member brings their own unique set of skills and experiences to the Board. As a member of your school's Board, you will need to work well in a team and have good communication skills. It can help to have an understanding of the Education sector. You may have financial skills and experience in managing people, knowledge and understanding of particular communities within your school, or experience working within your school and wider communities.

Our Election will be held on 10th September, so there is plenty of time to find out more and to think about standing for election. If you would like to find out more, you can visit the School Board Elections website, or contact me:teresab@brownsbay.school.nz.

You are welcome to come as a visitor to one of our meetings. Please let me know if you would like to join us at a meeting so we can help to make you feel welcome.

Planning for our Future

The role of the new Board will be to implement a new Strategic Plan. Strategic planning might not sound very exciting, (unless you are a Principal), but it is a time when you have the opportunity to shape the future of your child's school. For me it is an exciting time!

Over the next few weeks, you will have lots of opportunities to give feedback on shaping the future of the school. I will share that feedback with you as we go so you can continue to respond.

Our first two questions are really simple;

  1. What does your child like about our school?

  2. What would you like to change about our school?

You can click this link for the Google form - you only need to respond with 6 words. Look out in next weeks newsletter for a summary of the feedback we recieve.

Awhi Update

Positive Choices

This week, your children are learning about the positive choices they can make when something goes wrong. Around the school we have ‘Wheel of Choice’ boards to remind our students about what to do if they have a problem. Our wonderful Duty Teachers and Peer Mediators use them when they are supporting students to work through an issue and fix it up. We find it a really useful tool.

Next week, your children will be learning about our school value, Tu Rangatira - Personal Excellence. When we take pride in our work and have a ‘can do attitude’ we can achieve great things and feel good about ourselves. Have a chat with your child/children about the ways you take pride in the things you do and how it makes you feel. Effort Brings Reward.

Students Demonstrating Our School Values

Lata from Room 2 has received Trimper for showing the school values of Tu Rangatira - Personal Excellence. He consistently tries his hardest with all learning tasks and has an excellent attitude. We are so proud of him.

Theo from Room 28 was a really good friend this week. Thank you Theo.

Keeping Ourselves Safe Programme

In the first 2-3 weeks of Term 3, your child will be taking part in the ‘Keeping Ourselves Safe’ personal safety programme.  This programme has been designed to provide children with the skills to cope in situations that might involve abuse.

It has three overall aims:

  • To recognise unsafe behaviours

  • To develop and strengthen skills children need to keep themselves safe

  • To support and encourage children to get help from caring adults

Keeping Ourselves Safe has been developed by the New Zealand Police.  It will be taught by your child’s teacher, with help from a Police Education Officer as required.

To be successful, Keeping Ourselves Safe needs your help and support.  Some homework activities will come home for you to work on with your child.

It is important that you participate as much as possible, so that you can reinforce the messages children are getting and help your child use their new skills with confidence.

A Parent Information Session is being held on Tuesday 17 June at 2.15pm. If you would like to attend, please complete the online form:https://forms.gle/SHumVHveDB8YNAH76

We encourage you to view the programme online at:

Mid-Bays Kāhui Ako Cultural Performance

Our Mid-Bays Kāhui Ako is working to deepen connections and understandings of cultures across our schools and to develop relationships between our older and younger students. Last week, 45 students from the Rangitoto College Chinese and Korean Cultural groups visited our students. They began with a performance from their own cultures. The Chinese group performed a Circle-Fan Dance, the Sleeve Dance and Diabolo. The Korean group students performed Tae Kwon Do and the Korean fan dance. Our students were an excellent audience and were absolutely enthralled throughout the 40 minute performance!

Then the College students ran workshops for our Year 6 classes. Our students were able to try Tae Kwon Do, Diabolo, and the Chinese and Korean Fan Dance techniques. All students had the chance to try some new skills which they demonstrated admirably.

This was a fantastic opportunity for our Chinese and Korean students to see their cultures showcased, and for all of our students to learn more about these cultures. The College are keen to develop groups from other cultures as well in the future. We also loved seeing some of our ex-students returning to share their skills.

The next Kāhui Ako Cultural event will be an open invitation for all families of our schools to attend the dress rehearsals of China Night and Korea Night at Rangitoto College. There is no charge for these events and no ticketing - our families can attend at any point during the dress rehearsal (see Community Notices below and more photos in Photo Gallery).

CHINA NIGHT DRESS REHEARSAL - Thursday 29th May, 4.30pm - 7pm

Families from our Kāhui Ako schools are invited to attend the Rangitoto College dress rehearsal for their China Night celebration. These performances are always of a very high standard and are an excellent way for our students to see their own culture, or their friends' cultures, showcased. You are welcome to bring siblings and grandparents but please note that all children must be accompanied by a parent. You are also welcome to arrive and leave at any time with your child if they have other commitments - it is well worth even a short visit.

The QR code will take you to the group's Instagram page, which has some excellent snippets of the performances.

There will also be an opportunity to attend Korean Night later in the term.
