Celebrating Diversity at the Multicultural Recreation and Community Centre
A reflection on the first year (almost!)
Since its grand opening on March 5, 2024, the Multicultural Recreation and Community Centre (MRCC) has become a vibrant hub for Christchurch's diverse communities. This unique partnership between the Christchurch City Council and the MRCC Charitable Trust has transformed the Centre into a bustling venue for cultural exchange and community activities.
A Hub of Activity
In the first 8 months, the MRCC has welcomed over 7,000 individuals from 121 different user groups, including agencies, community organizations, and individuals. The Centre's versatile spaces host a variety of regular activities such as African Drumming classes, the Italian Playgroup, Share Kai Hui, Tamil and Nepalese Language Classes, and meetings of the Bhutanese Society of Canterbury. The Japanese Choir and Rewi Alley meetings also find a home here. The Centre has been the backdrop for numerous cultural celebrations, including the Eid Festival, Chaharshanbe Suri Celebration, Nowruz, Durga Puja, Eritrean National Day Celebration, Samoan Language Week, African Day, Teej Festival, Moon Festival, and Buddha Day.
Supporting Community Organizations
In addition to its event spaces, the MRCC provides long-term office space for five community organizations: Terra Nova Foundation, Tongan Youth Trust (starting January 2025), Interpreting NZ, the Korean Society, and the Pacific Peoples Trust. There's also a hot desk available for groups needing part-time office space, such as Share Kai and the Pakistani Association.
A Name with Meaning
The MRCC has been given the name "Te Ngira" by the Treaty Partnership Team after consultation with Mana Whenua. The name, which means "The Needle," is inspired by the whakatauki:
"Kotahi te kōhao o te ngira e kuhuna ai te miro mā, te miro pango, te miro whero"
("There is but one eye of the needle, through which white, black, and red cotton must pass").
This saying emphasizes the importance of unity and collaboration, reflecting the Centre's multicultural mission.
The MRCC is more than just a venue; it's a testament to the power of community and the beauty of cultural diversity. Whether you're attending a class, celebrating a festival, or simply enjoying the vibrant atmosphere, the MRCC is a place where everyone is welcome.
