Top Sports recipient (Hākinakina) Hosae Wilson
This award recognises Hosae who shows awesomeness, leadership, and excellence in sport - not just through playing, but through the way he contributes, supports others, and leads by example. Hosae, has truly lived up to that spirit. For the past five years, Hosae has been a constant and positive presence in Mairehau High School sport. Whether it’s helping out behind the scenes, stepping up to referee a game, or encouraging others to give things a go, Hosae brings energy, reliability and a great attitude to everything he does. His commitment has made a real difference to our sporting community, and we’re proud to recognise Hosae as this year’s Te Toa Whakaihuwaka (Top Sports Award) winner.
Top Arts recipient (Mahi Toi) Allan Zhao
Our sole Excellence Award recipient for the Arts this year is a Year 13 student whose dedication and talent have shone brightly across Mairehau and beyond. They successfully auditioned for, and participated in, the Christchurch School’s Regional Orchestra as an oboist, attending Friday afternoon rehearsals and performing in the annual roadshow at Villa Maria, Kaiapoi, and Christchurch Girls’ High School. It is a privilege to share the citation for this year’s Arts Taonga recipient: A hardworking, committed, and reliable member of our arts community, Allan has grown from an enthusiastic junior into a true leader, admired by peers and trusted by staff. Over the past two years, he has taken on the responsibility of running full rehearsals for the Woodwind Ensemble, Wire Choir, and Concert Band, while balancing academic, leadership, and personal commitments. Allan's musical achievements extend beyond Mairehau, having rehearsed and performed with some of Christchurch’s top young musicians in the Regional Orchestra, all while approaching every opportunity with humility. Mairehau whānau, congratulates our 2025 Arts Taonga recipient Allan Zhao on his outstanding accomplishment.
Top Cultural recipient (Ahurea Māori) Tasha Masaga-Wilson
Representing both Waikato and Samoa, Tasha Masaga-Wilson embodies the core values of our school in everything she does. When faced with challenges, she consistently rises to the occasion, showing determination, courage, and heart. Tasha’s achievements speak for themselves — excelling in Kapa Haka, Māori performing arts, Manu Kōrero, and proudly leading her own kapa haka group with strength and passion. Through Mau Rākau, she demonstrates rangatiratanga, confidence, and a deep commitment to her community and wider whānau. She carries herself with aroha and humility — qualities that are rare and deeply admired — always showing grace, poise, and a willingness to “feel the fear and do it anyway.” A truly deserving recipient.
