Celebration of Culture

Anna Simonsen, Nethara Lamahewa (APC Student Leader) and Teresa Ng (APC Deputy Student Leader) —

The Asian Performance Club held its first family night on Thursday 11 May, and it was a fantastic celebration of culture. The student-led club was set up a year ago to foster a community for Asian students and a space where Asian culture can be celebrated. The event was held in Gym 2, and it was heartening to see a large number of whānau attend to support the club’s efforts.

On the night we enjoyed dance performances from China (choreographed by Yr 10 Yian Liu); Sri Lanka (with a guest appearance from the Sri Lankan dance academy); Cambodia (taught by previous Yr 13 Chanmalyka Bar), as well as a Korean K pop number (Imaan Khan, Jihyo Youn and Megumi Seta) and a Bollywood mash up (choreographed by Year 12 students Sahana Brown and Crystal Sharma). It was amazing to see the level of talent on display. The coordination, energy and enthusiasm of the performers was infectious. The crowd also enjoyed listening to the Guzheng played by Tina Ng, mother of Year 11 students Hayley and Katherine.

Congratulations to all the students for their hard work and dedication. We hope that this will be an annual event for Wellington Girls’ College.
