Science Fair

Wellington Girls' College —

Over the course of 2018, students from all year levels competed in the Annual WGC Science Fair.

Students had to decide on something to research and experiment on, conduct their work, and produce a board to be displayed in the atrium. The amount of time and hard work that goes into these projects is astounding, so well done to all those who took part.

On the 6 September, ten students attended the NIWA Regional Science Fair to compete against other high schools from around the Wellington region.  These projects were selected by the Science teachers of WGC to represent our school on a regional level.

The projects ranged from the best stain removers for carpet to experimenting on burn times for different types of candles. The students headed to The Ryman Facility in Karori to set up their boards.  Then, over the course of the afternoon, students were questioned by a panel of judges on the work they carried out.  It was a long afternoon of strenuous questioning.

Results were announced the following day, and WGC was well represented.  Holly Bamber won the Fair with her work on preventing landslips through vegetation, alongside receiving 1st in class, the VUW Science prize, the Geosociety NZ prize and the Massey/GNS Science Disaster Research prize.   Zoe Ashton experimented on the effect of tempering metals on their magnetic ability and she won 2nd in class and an Engineering NZ prize. Additionally, Annabel Peacock received a Highly Commended for her work on designing candles.

The Science department is so proud of everyone who took part and cannot wait to run Science Fair again in 2019.
