Appointment of new Deputy Principal

Wellington Girls' College —

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Deb King as our new Deputy Principal.

We received 15 applications for this role and shortlisted three, who met with the senior staff for an informal discussion. This was followed by a formal presentation and interview with the Board Chair, the Staff Representative on the BOT, one of the Deputy Principals, one of the 2019 Head Girls and me.

Deb started her teaching career at WGC, teaching Drama and English and is currently Deputy Principal of Newlands College, where her focus is on teaching and learning, Māori student achievement and student events. She is actively involved in the wider life of the school and is already known to some of our students as Manager of the Wellington U15 Hockey team.

Deb lives in Northland with her husband and four children, one of whom is a Year 10 WGC student. Her second daughter will start at WGC in Year 9 next year.

Deb will focus on the curriculum at WGC and she will teach in the English department.

Deb has made the following statement:

Kia ora koutou
Ko Deb King toku ingoa

No Te Anau au

Ko ngāti Kiwi toku iwi

I am very much looking forward to returning to Wellington Girls' College as this was the school where I started my teaching career (it seems like 5 minutes ago!)

An English and Drama teacher with a keen interest in learning and curriculum, I have lived in Wellington for 20 years - working most of that time as a teacher and then a Deputy Principal at Newlands College.

The challenge of meeting the learning needs of both teachers and students has been a fantastic experience and I have learnt a lot from the Newlands community. I have a real passion for learning.

We look forward to welcoming Deb back to WGC in January 2020.
