Regional Wellington Junior Science Tournament

Mark Collard —

On Tuesday 1 December, a dedicated group of five Wellington Girls' College Science students went to Onslow College to represent the school in the Regional Wellington Junior Science Tournament. After a hard day of presenting and arguing their findings in front of a panel of jurors, they were declared the winners (for the second year in a row).

The competition requires teams to research and report on the characteristics and parameters of three open-ended problems. The problems require content knowledge, creative problem solving, team work, communication and presentation ability and inquiry skills in mixed fields (mainly biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics).

When presenting their findings as a reporter, and whilst opposing, the skills of debating and persuasion also come into play.
