Barbershop Regional Competition
On the 20th of May WGC’s barbershop group, The Notabelles, competed in the Young Singers in Harmony Wellington regional competition at the Lower Hutt Town Hall. The Notabelles are a new group who came together at the start of the year when several students decided to bring barbershop back to WGC. They are organised and led by Holly, Tali Whiteridge, and Clara Kennedy.
This was their first competition, and they were thrilled to place second in the Upper Voices Chorus Section. Clara Kennedy directed, and they were the only student-directed group in the Wellington contest. “It was an amazing competition with schools attending from all around the Wellington district,” says Amy Hopkinson (Year 13). “There were also some incredible professional choruses performing, including Pacific Connection.”
To prepare for the event the Notabelles attended a workshop at Wellington College in March, where they had the opportunity to meet with other barbershop groups and teachers and work with a tutor to learn a song and gain further understanding of the craft. It is clear that their hard work and dedication are paying off, and we can’t wait to see what they do next.
