Languages Week
Languages Week, in Week 7 (10-14 June), gave us an opportunity to celebrate the languages that are taught at Wellington Girls' College (Te Reo Māori, Chinese, German, French, New Zealand Sign Language and Latin), and also the many languages spoken by our teachers, support staff, students and their families.
On Monday lunchtime, Sophia, our German language assistant, ran a session in which students were given a chance to paint like a German master.
On Tuesday, our Mandarin language assistant, Lili, helped students to learn the beautiful art of Chinese knotting.
On Thursday, Sylouan, our French language assistant, taught a group of students and teachers to dance "le Rock".
The week ended with an Adventure Race, in which students had to run all over the school taking photos (for example, of a building that can be seen from WGC that resembles the Roman Colosseum), taking videos (for example, of their group saying a German tongue twister or signing various words in NZSL), and answering questions (such as one that required them to explain the meaning and story behind the name for Wellington region, "Te Upoko o te Ika a Maui".).
