Meningococcal disease

Wellington Girls' College —

Meningococcal disease is an infection caused by bacteria that can lead to meningitis, an infection of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord and septicaemia ( blood poisoning).

It is more common in under 5s and 13-25 year age groups and when other winter viruses are in the community.

Five people in the greater Wellington region have had meningococcal disease this year; ranging in age from less than 1 year to mid-20s and sadly one person has died.
