Sports & Cultural Awards

Wellington Girls' College —

Our Sports and Cultural Dinner was held at the Beehive on Thursday 25 October.

Results of the Sports Awards:

Sportsperson of the Year:   Brooklyn Saunders

This is awarded for achievement at school, regionally, nationally and internationally, usually in their one chosen sport.   For the second year running, Brooklyn has taken out this title after another successful year in her kayak.  Brooklyn competed in the NZ U18 team in both Sydney and Adelaide this year and was part of the NZ Junior and U23 world kayaking championship team that competed in Bulgaria.  The team placed 11th Overall in U18 K4 500m, which was a New Zealand Record.

Contribution to Sport:   Jordyn Chin
Jordyn has received the Contribution to Sport award for the second year running.  She was our Head of Sport & Rec for 2018, and has been invaluable to the sports programme at WGC.  She helped organise numerous sports events including a rather interesting “Pairs Yoga” which saw dozens of girls break out some rather unusual poses in the gym!  She brought in a guest speaker focusing on the wellbeing of our students and co-ordinated a food stalls day which helped finance the teams that went to tournament.
She captained the Senior A basketball team and the Senior A volleyball team.  She also led the Senior B netball team.  Jordyn gave back to the school in so many ways including coaching junior basketball and volleyball teams.
