Literacy and Numeracy Co-Requisites: Y10 and Y11

Mel Eade —

As you may know, it is now mandatory for students to pass new Literacy and Numeracy tests before they can be awarded NCEA in Level 2.

The Literacy standard comprises two tests; a reading test and a writing test. The Numeracy standard is one test. These are digital tests and students will have ample time to complete them.

Students can attempt the test more than once and can take it at any time in their NCEA journey. Read more about it here.

Each year there are two rounds of testing. One is in May and one in September.

In 2024, all Y11s will do the tests in May on the 28th, 29th and 30th.

All Y10s and any Y11s who need to try again or were absent will do the tests in September. We will confirm the exact dates nearer the time.

Our English, Maths and Learning Studies departments will be working to prepare students for the tests however these tests will not be the sole focus of the English and Maths programmes.

The diagnostic testing that is done in Years 9 and 10 helps us to identify those students who need to strengthen their reading, writing or numeracy skills. Often these students get supported in Learning Services and through options such as Criminal Minds and Mathematical Language.

Other students will still need support and may need to do some tasks at home to embed the skills they will need to be successful.

All students have access to Education Perfect, an online platform that has tasks specifically designed to practise for the tests. English and Maths teachers will show students how to access this but it will be up to them and whānau to use this resource at home.

Y10 English students have purchased a book called ‘Literacy Essentials’ that they can use at home and school. Y11 whānau could purchase the book here if you would like an extra resource.

Y10 and Y11 Mathematics students have purchased a book called ‘Numeracy Practice’ that they can use at home and school.

WGC will be hosting a Parent Information Evening for Y11 whānau on Tuesday, 19th March, 5:30pm. Invitations will be send out by email in the coming weeks.
