Healthychick101, also known as Riley, enjoys a very large Instagram following, addressing health, exercise and body positivity. Recently she spoke to over 300 students as part of Exec Week, talking of her journey on how to be healthy and happy as opposed to thinking happiness would come only from losing weight. Well done to the Sports & Recreation Committee for getting Riley in to talk so inspirationally to students, and thank you to Riley for posing for so many selfies and answering so many questions!
Futsal
A number of WGC football and futsal players, recently trialled for places in the Wellington provincial futsal teams to compete in the Futsal Youth National Championships, to be held in Palmerston North over the July holidays. Selected for the Capital Futsal U16 Girls team are Jemma Catherwood , Libby Browne and Amanda Parlane and for the U19 Girls team are Samantha Whyte, Nicole Dalley, Jemma Hall and Anushka Desai.
WGC / PNGHS Winter Sports Exchange
After 3 years of being soundly beaten by Palmerston North Girls' High School, the Wellington Girls' teams fought back this year with a fabulous overall win for the Shield. The Senior B netball team started off the day with a close win 19-17, with Alice Wotton named player of the day. The Junior A netball team had a good close win too 24-21, and named player of the day was Anna Tirikatene. The Senior A netball team went down by 10 to a strong Palmy team. Piper Maaka was named player of the day. Across town our 1st XI Hockey team was having a great tussle which ended in a draw 1-1. This was the best result in years for our hockey team. Player of the day was Sara Cooper. The football team was gutted with a close 1-2 loss, with Lucy Jones named player of the day. And the Senior A basketball team had a strong game to win 86-64, Nicole Wilson named player of the day.
Cross Country
College Sport Wellington Cross Country Champs were recently held at Harcourt Park, Upper Hutt. WGC runners excelled with our Under 16 team winning both the 3-person, and 6-person team events. Jessica Hughes came in 2nd, Maia Holbert 3rd, Hannah Evett 5th, Carly Smith 6th, Megumi Hirose 21st and Emily Ford 29th. The Senior Under 19 team won the 3-person team event. Lucy Hegan came 2nd, Emma Douglass 5th and Caitlin Douglass 10th.
Many of the team attended the National Cross Country Champs in Taupo where the 3-person team of Maia, Jess and Hannah came 2nd in the Junior grade. All 3 were selected for the Wellington relay team which also came 2nd. Seniors Caitlin, Emma and Olivia Pugh came in 4th in the 3-person team event. Lucy Hegan was selected for the Wellington Senior relay team which was placed 1st in their event.
Basketball
Four WGC Senior A basketball players, Nicole Wilson, Lawrin Tipene, Maia Ramis and Jordyn Chin, were recently selected for the Wellington Under 19 women's rep team. The team competed at the AON U19 National Basketball Championships in Auckland over the Queen’s Birthday Weekend. They finished 5th place in the tournament, after narrowly losing a place in the semi playoffs.
Netball
Four WGC students were selected for the Wellington Black Under 15 netball team – Taylor Bryers, Anna Tirikatene, Justice Firestone and Eve Waititi. This team has had a great start to the rep season, winning the last two tournaments: the Majorie Jenden two-day tournament in Wellington last weekend and the Betty Steffensen tournament in Palmerston North played over the weekend. Laura Gedye was recently selected for the Wellington Year 9 representative team (she is the only WGC team member). The Year 9 rep team have also had a great start to the representative season winning both tournaments too.
Hockey
The WGC 1st XI Hockey team played a tough rain-soaked match against QMC recently. They were playing for the Wellington Cup which is the final of the grading round. After QMC was disallowed a goal in the first 5 minutes, WGC regrouped and played up QMC's end for the majority of the game. Jade Jones slotted the first goal after receiving a penalty and then Liv Wills finished off skilful work through the defenders with a great field goal. Jade Jones and Sara Cooper have made the Capital Under 18 team, Sara as captain. Sara is also a member of the High Performance Sport NZ Regional Hockey Academy based in Wellington. In the Wellington Under 18 team are Harriet Leslie, Olivia Wills, Amy Wills, Caitlin Rennie and Phoebe Pottinger.
