Alexis Whyte Poetry Competition
The annual WGC Alexis Whyte Poetry Competition honours a past student who died in a car accident. This prize was endowed by her friends. This year the competition was judged by poet Ruby Solly (Kāi Tahu, Waitaha, Kāti Māmoe).
The senior winner was Kathryn Eagle (Y13) who entered two poems 'Quieten Down', and 'A Tribute to my Jeans'. Ruby said, " Quieted Down is a stunning poem that tells a story that is all too common, in a way that is personal, brave, and clear. 'A Tribute to my Jeans' also takes some more common experiences and uses them to tell a deeper and more complex story in a way that is skillful and seamless."
Senior commendations were given to Milly McLaren (11) "There is Something Inherently human about being hated" and Grace Byrne (13) "Mourning Breath".
The junior winner was Tara Williams (Y9) with 'Stalker'. Ruby said, "'Stalker' really impressed me with its use of narrative and rhetorical question, while still working so strongly in the poem format, I felt like I was in the poem, or even in a movie!"
The junior runner-up was Samali Arachchige (year 10) "Dream".
Junior commendations were given to Hattie Kempthorne-Paulet and Tara Williams (year 9) "Perfection" and Hattie Kempthorne-Paulet (year 9) "Two Faced".
