TE REO MĀORI
Wellington Girls' College - May 31, 2024
Since 2018 all Year 9 students complete a half-year course in Te Reo Māori. This course is aimed at providing an essential basis of knowledge and understanding of Te Reo Māori and tikanga. Students learn how to have basic conversations in Te Reo and how to introduce themselves in formal and informal situations. They will develop their ability to communicate in Māori, develop an understanding of Māori culture and a respect for cultural diversity. They will also develop an appreciation of the unique contribution of te reo Māori to New Zealand in the past, present, and future and participate in activities such as games, songs, dialogues, weaving, kōwhaiwhai and tukutuku.
Staff are encouraged to use Te Reo as part of their spoken and written daily interactions. The correct use of macrons is important, and to facilitate their use all school computers have the Māori keyboard installed (details here). See IT if you have any issues.
