Maadi Cup 2023 Success

Wellington Girls' College —

The Maadi Regatta is the most prestigious event in New Zealand for high school rowing teams, and this year's competition did not disappoint. Our rowing crew, consisting of dedicated athletes and coaches, competed at Lake Karapiro from 27 March to 1 April, and achieved outstanding results.

The team's hard work and commitment paid off as they brought home three medals, including a gold and two bronze medals. The girls' U17 pair, Emma Bagrie and Jess Sutherland, along with their coach Catherine Duffin, took the gold medal. Their remarkable teamwork and determination led them to victory, and their success is a testament to the countless hours of training and preparation they put in leading up to the competition.

In addition to the gold medal, our rowing crew also won two bronze medals. The girls' U18 pair, Zola Kemp and Liv Mazey, coached by Catherine Duffin, earned the third-place. Similarly, the girls' U18 four, consisting of Zola Kemp, Liv Mazey, Emma Bagrie, Jess Sutherland, and cox Emily Mora, and coached by Catherine Duffin, put in a tremendous effort to secure the third-place finish.

The success of our rowing crew at the Maadi Regatta is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion of each and every member of the team. They faced tough competition, but their determination and teamwork led them to victory. The medals they earned are not just a symbol of their success but also a testament to the strength of our school's sports program.

It is worth noting that the Maadi Regatta has been disrupted in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was cancelled in 2020 and cut short for some rowers in 2022, leading to a lot of uncertainty and disappointment for many high school rowing teams across New Zealand. As a result, this year's Maadi Regatta was extra special, as it was a lot of rowers' first ever Maadi. Their success at the event, therefore, is even more impressive and highlights the strength and resilience of our team.

Congratulations to our rowing crew for their outstanding performance at the Maadi Regatta, and we look forward to seeing them achieve even greater success in the future. Their hard work and dedication are an inspiration to us all.
