Tower Block
As building works begin to demolish Tower Block, we were delighted to hear from Dorothy Thompson (née Bradley-Feary 1967-1971).
I remember Tower Block being built and the excitement of having a form room on the top floor. Our parents were assured at the time that the 'floating foundations' made it earthquake proof!
While it was being built, my form used a house over the road which made us feel very grown up as we were pretty much left to our own devices. I used to spend break times with my friends trying out all orchestral instruments which were kept in rooms upstairs and got a taste for the violin and cello (I was already enjoying my school flute lessons). All the same, it was very sad to see the beautiful old building come down.
There used to be regular 'special assemblies' in the old hall for we girls who travelled into Wellington on the Paekakariki Line when we would be reprimanded for various misdemeanors! We wore short white socks in the summer, thick stockings in the winter, those ghastly Phys Ed rompers, scarves to be worn UNDER the coat, hats to be worn at all times in public. I remember an assembly being called where the news that Wellington East Girls' College (I think) had discontinued the wearing of school hats - "Gels, we have more pride!"
