Some things you might not know about WGC…..
We are 140 years old this year
The school was initially named Wellington Girls’ High School and was located in Abel Smith St. The move to the Pipitea St site came in 1887
When we opened in 1883 there were 40 students on the first day, but this grew to 60 a week later. Today’s roll is 1387
The current roll is the most diverse it has been in recent years, made up of Asian 21%; European 61%; Māori 9%; Middle Eastern/Latin American/African 3%; Other 2% and Pasifika 4% (These are MOE categories)
We currently have 36 International students at WGC, but next term expect about 25 more
10% of our students live outside the school’s zone
We now have 104 teachers and 29 support staff
We’ll be celebrating our 140th birthday over the week of 12 - 16 June with a display in the Library and a special assembly.
