Some things you might not know about WGC…..

Julia Davidson —

  • We are 140 years old this year

  • The school was initially named Wellington Girls’ High School and was located in Abel Smith St. The move to the Pipitea St site came in 1887

  • When we opened in 1883 there were 40 students on the first day, but this grew to 60 a week later. Today’s roll is 1387

  • The current roll is the most diverse it has been in recent years, made up of Asian 21%; European 61%; Māori 9%; Middle Eastern/Latin American/African 3%; Other 2% and Pasifika 4% (These are MOE categories)

  • We currently have 36 International students at WGC, but next term expect about 25 more

  • 10% of our students live outside the school’s zone

  • We now have 104 teachers and 29 support staff

  • We’ll be celebrating our 140th birthday over the week of 12 - 16 June with a display in the Library and a special assembly.
