Physical Education & Health

Sarah Calcutt & Gail Ives —

What a start for Year 9 and 10 Physical Education and Health 2019. Both year groups have been taking part in Adventure Based Learning activities, with the aim of getting to know others in their class and developing their cooperative and interpersonal skills.

It has been awesome to already see students taking responsibility for their own learning and stepping up for leadership opportunities. We encourage our students to take risks, share ideas and work independently and this is a great base for our Senior Health and Physical Education courses, both practically and in the classroom.

Year 10 Outdoor Education activities

"Combine the best of wonderful Wellington scenery with delicious home cooking" and what do you get - a perfect way to start the year in WGCs innovative Year 10 extension PE outdoor adventures module.  We start with a tramp up the beautiful bush in Te Ahumairangi Hill of course, using all the safety procedures and risk management learnt in class to get to our destination.  Then the class makes the most delicious unique handcrafted s'mores seen on this side of the equator.

On the way back, we challenged ourselves by returning via a tantalising shortcut that involved slipping and sliding (safely) down tracks.  No injuries reported but lots of smiles on faces.

Along with the group work, teamwork and positive attitudes all round, these were great outings to prepare us for our next big outdoor adventure, a trip up the Otaki Gorge.  More fun times ahead we hope.
