Ministry of Education update about the building project
As you are aware, the Ministry of Education is funding a major redevelopment project at Wellington Girls’ College, and we are writing to provide you with an update of the current project works scheduled.
For the Tower Block demolition, a large crawler crane will be brought to site in January. We will also use this opportunity to remove what is remaining of the Hall, following the demolition last year.
The demolition crane will be arriving in parts in mid-late January 2023, to be assembled throughout the week and structural demolition will start soon after.
Tower block works will be carried out by cutting the building into crane liftable pieces and lowering these pieces to ground level. Once removed, the concrete and reinforcing steel will then be recycled.
We anticipate the arrival of two Portacom music classrooms and four music practice rooms in January 2023. These will go into the area currently occupied by the cricket nets. The delivery will be via the Hobson Street gate or over the fence at the corner of Moturoa and Hobson Street depending on their final position.
Contractors will be required to comply with Health and Safety regulations throughout by using spotters, installing signage, and following a safety management plan.
We are expecting construction traffic in Pipitea Street between the hours of 7.00am and 5pm and all traffic management plans will be agreed with Wellington City Council (WCC). All construction contractor methods will be regularly reviewed to minimise noise and dust disruption.
All construction methods have been chosen to reduce the unavoidable deconstruction noise which will be confined within the WCC noise control requirements.
We are aware this may cause some inconvenience and we apologise in advance for any effects.
Thank you for your understanding and continual support.
