Senior Wellness Day

Melissa Denzler —

This year's fourth annual Senior Wellness Day comprised a keynote presentation about resilience and how to stay well, followed by over 60 workshops aimed to support our students and their wellbeing.

Bridget Young (Clinical Psychologist from CAMHS) and Letitia Woods (Social Worker) presented key information to our students about what anxiety and depression are (and what they are not) and strategies to stay well using Mason Durie’s Te Whare Tapa Wha framework.  They cautioned students about using Dr Google to diagnose.  They encouraged us to consider how we could apply some practical wellbeing strategies into our lives.  They asked us how we could extend the capacity of our glass to stop it spilling over.  They also challenged us to consider what we could do to have less in our glass to start with.

The workshops that followed were divided into 3 broad categories:

Personal Wellbeing
Learning or trying something new
Personal Interest

So whether students were interested in coaching a sports team, knitting, learning about NZ Sign Language, taking a GAP year, consent or mindfulness, we had the workshop for them.

A key message from Senior Wellness Day was that everyone's timing is different and that everything in life happens at its own pace.   We look forward to organising next year’s event.

Inā kei to mohio
Koe ko wai koe,
I anga mai koe i
Hea, kei te mohio koe.
Kei te anga atu ki hea
If you know who you are
And where you are from,
Then you will know
Where you are going
