Year 12 student Teresa Ng will be heading to the World Schools Debating Championship in Vietnam this July as a member of the New Zealand Schools’ Debating team. She was one of five students nationwide selected for the team in May, when she competed in the National Finals as a part of the Wellington Gold team. Teresa was also awarded the Rosemary Dixon Cup for Most Promising Debater.

She started debating in Year 9 and her path toward the National Finals this year started at the regional competition in April, where she was part of a WGC team. Her performance earned her a spot on Wellington Gold, and she trained with her new team for the next two months in preparation for Nationals.

Her journey to Worlds will start in Thailand, where she will spend ten days working with the other members of the New Zealand team before moving on to Vietnam. Students will have the opportunity to participate in social and cultural activities during their time away and Teresa is looking forward to everything the trip will have to offer.

“Debating is a good way to learn about the world and different viewpoints,” she says, adding that it is also ,“fun and social and can lead to lots of great opportunities.” She would love to see more people at WGC, particularly junior students, get involved in Debating and urges people to come along and have a go. We congratulate Teresa on her fantastic achievement and hope that she and the NZ team have an amazing and successful trip.
