Mel is already well known to the WGC staff and many students and parents as she has been our HOD English since 2019, and Assistant HOD prior to that time, having joined the school in 2016. This year she has been in the senior staff in an acting role.

She is a hugely experienced teacher whose innovative curriculum design has seen the growth of the English Projects and English Stories courses in the senior school.

She has also been a wonderful wānanga teacher, who is farewelling her Yr 13 class this year - with lashing of her famous Russian fudge.

Mel has driven the redesign of our Yr 11 programme for 2024 and she will be taking over the responsibility for leading Curriculum at WGC from the start of next year.

Known for her love of reading, her positive and pragmatic approach to the work that needs to be done and her wonderful sense of fun and the absurd, we are all delighted that Mel is joining the SMT permanently next year.

Ave Wilson - Deputy Principal 2024

Ave comes to us from Onslow College, having previously taught at Paraparaumu College.

In that time she has been a Dean; an Assistant HOD English; an acting HOD English; TIC Media Studies; lead timetabler; Kahui Ako leader of UDL (Universal Design for Learning) and in charge of academic tracking. She has also taken the lead in moving Onslow College into working with KAMAR, including using it for timetabling.

Even though she is an English/Media specialist, she has been described as having a really good Maths brain and is known as the ‘Queen of spreadsheets’ by some of her colleagues.

Her referees have told us she is warm, kind, patient, highly organised, creative and utterly professional.

We look forward to having her join us at WGC next year.
