Cultural Extravaganza

Paul Maskill —

The Combined Colleges’ Cultural Extravaganza was held at the MFC on Monday evening. This major showcase of the complete range of Performing Arts cultivated at both schools, is a unique opportunity for both parents and the students to see the work of each group. Evie Dore and Ruby Gane shared MC spots with Will Chandler, Tai Renner and Jud Adamson from Wellington College and the evening was launched with the combined colleges’ Kapa Haka; Te Haeata Awatea.

The rest of the combined ensembles followed; starting with the choir, singing in both Hebrew and English, the orchestra, playing an opera excerpt by Saint Saēns and the two of them joining forces for a medley of songs by Irving Berlin.

The Combined Concert Band and the Combined Big Band rounded off the first half with a selection of arranged folk, blues, jazz and funk numbers.

The second half comprised the Pasifika performances, celebrating the cultures of Tonga, Samoa and Tokelau as well as dance sequences from each college: Wellington Girls’ College relishing another chance to present their award- winning Showquest entry, followed by the Dufferin Street Dancers from Wellington College. The showcase concluded with a massed item involving all of the evening’s performers.
