Erin Roxburgh (2006-2010)

Erin is proudly of Ngati Porou and Ngapuhi descent. She completed her undergraduate degree and Masters degree through Victoria University of Wellington and is a born and bred Wellingtonian. Her Masters thesis grew out of a strong interest in Māori Business, and a desire to contribute to the growing body of Māori business knowledge. Her thesis looked at how Iwi Entities maintain their Kaupapa Māori in commercial business settings. Erin also works as a tutor at the university and is a mentor with Āwhina (Māori Student Support).

"It crazy to think its been just over a decade since I left Wellington Girls College, it feels like just yesterday! Although, when I think about all the things I’ve been up to since I left WGC it actually maybe feels like longer! I’ve been up to a bit since leaving WGC, however one thing that encompasses all of those things is a real drive to contribute positively to the world in some way.

In an academic sense I have ended up Victoria University in the Business School for over 10 years. I completed my undergraduate degree here, and went on to complete my master’s degree. Throughout my postgraduate career I developed a real interest in the intersection of western management and te ao māori. I am currently in the last 6 months oh my PhD here at Te Herenga Waka, which looks at Governance in Māori Organisations. I was also fortunate enough to be offered a full time permanent role here in the school of management as a lecturer. So my career as academic is just beginning which is exciting. I love teaching and have been given the opportunity to develop new papers in the school for next year.

In a sporting sense, I continue to play Netball just as I did at WGC. I’ve been playing Prem for Team Vic. I also in my early 20s was introduced to Handball, which was one of the best things to happen to me. I’ve gone on to represent New Zealand in both indoor Handball and Beach Handball. Both have been life changing opportunities. Im also proud to be a part of both squads which have grown, now to have competitive selection for both teams which shows the growth in handball here in New Zealand.

I have also stumbled into the world of Sports Governance. I’ve  always had a way of getting myself involved in local committees, more from a place of wanting to help. That has then led on to me holding a board position on the Women in Sport Aotearoa board, and I currently sit on the Netball Wellington Centre Board."
