Exploring School Language - we're here to help!

Sheryn Follero —

Discover the meanings behind words we use in school, Feel free to ask if unsure!

Kia ora, Kia orana, Malo e leiei, Talofa, Namaste, Bula, Ni Hao, Kumusta, Welcome to our friendly school community! Have you ever heard some words around school that you didn't quite understand? Don't worry, we are here to help!

At our kura, or school, we use some special words that may be new to you. For example, a Whaea (sounds like 'fire') is a female teacher, while a Matua is a male teacher. When we talk about our students, we use the word 'tamariki' which means children.

If any of these words or others you may here sound unfamiliar, please feel free to ask! Understanding these terms helps us create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.

Together, let's embrace our Te Reo Māori that is unique to Aotearoa, New Zealand and is our taonga, treasure and celebrate our diverse community. If you ever have questions or need clarification, don't hesitate to ask - we are here to support you!
