Relationships and Sexuality Education

Donna Bilas —

In Term 3 our health education topic is called Relationships and Sexuality Education. It will be delivered over 2-3 weeks starting in week 3.

Learning about relationships and sexuality is part of the New Zealand Curriculum and is one aspect of health education (within Health and Physical Education).

Children and young people learn about themselves and develop knowledge and skills about acting in positive and respectful ways with others.

Effective relationships and sexuality education takes a positive view of sexual development as a natural part of growing up. It is vital to the overall wellbeing of children and young people.

We use the Ministry of Education's Relationships and sexuality education guide A guide for teachers, leaders, and boards of trustees that informs principals, boards and teachers on the requirements under the Education and Training Act 2020. This resource focuses strongly on consensual, healthy and respectful relationships as being essential to student wellbeing (years 1–8; years 9–13).

Education Act

“According to the Education Act (1989; updated in 2001, section 25AA), parents/caregivers may write to the principal  principal@addington.school.nz requesting to have their child excluded from any particular element of sexuality education in a health education programme. The principal is required to ensure that the student is excluded from the relevant tuition and that the student is supervised during that time”
