Tournament of Minds - 2024

Julia Scott —

Seven Intermediate and two Senior teams from our school recently shone at the recent  Auckland Regional Tournament of Minds (ToMs), an international competition that challenges students with creative, open-ended problems.

This year’s tournament pushed participants to their limits in teamwork, experimentation, and innovation. Our teams embraced the challenge, developing essential skills like critical thinking and collaboration—all while having a blast. The program fosters individual growth within a team setting, rewarding bold ideas and creative thinking. We’re incredibly proud of their efforts.

In an exciting turn, our Senior Social Sciences team won their division and travelled to Wellington to compete in the National Tournament! They took full advantage of their trip, visiting Parliament, the National Library, and Te Papa before the competition. Thank you to Mrs Haine, Mrs Wallace, and Mr Diogo for giving up their weekend to guide the students through their trip. We're thrilled to announce the team placed second in New Zealand. Huge congratulations to the team for this incredible achievement. Full Auckland results are listed below.

We would like to thank all the parents and teachers who supported our students throughout the Tournament Season to achieve these brilliant results. We know they are looking forward to next year!

SPIRIT OF TOM AWARDS

The Spirit of TOM refers to the fundamental attitude that underpins the entire program. It encompasses all the activities involved in successful personal and team participation. It is evident when teams:

● demonstrate tolerance, co-operation and fair play;

● abide by the rules of the program and are self-disciplined in their problem solving;

● respect the views and opinions of all team members; and

● respond positively to overcome obstacles encountered during the Challenge timeline.
