Introducing English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), 2024

The AJHS ESOL Department provides a programme that caters for the needs of students whose English is their second or other language. The programme helps new immigrant and international students develop their English language skills within a shorter time frame, enabling students to settle well into mainstream classes and make consistent progress.

Most ESOL students attend two to three sessions a week for one hour tuition. They work with our specialist ESOL teachers in a small group setting. Their individual learning needs are identified through initial assessment, and programmes are planned to meet their needs.

Our ESOL students enjoy this small, friendly environment where they feel confident to prioritise their learning. Many make satisfying progress within a short time.

Highlights of the ESOL programme include:

  • Fun, hands-on and practical learning activities

  • Small group instruction

  • Focusing on all language needs, i.e. oral, written and visual

  • Individual as well as in-class support (with teacher aides when possible)

  • Relating to current school topics

  • Well supported facilities and resources

  • Friendly and supportive teaching environment

Our AJHS ESOL Department is run by very experienced and well-qualified ESOL teachers, including Susanna Guo, Tahnya Mekkelholt and Veronica Zane. You are very welcome to visit the team. Should you have any queries, please contact Veronica Zane
