2024 has been the first year of our new PB4L behavioural learning programme. PB4L stands for Positive Behaviour For Learning. The main objective of PB4L is to prioritise and reward good behaviour instead of punishing bad behaviour.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the three pillars of PB4L:

Integrity (Kia Pono) - Being honest and doing what is right, even when it is difficult.
Respect (Kia Manaaki) - Treating yourself, other people, the environment, and the community with kindness and consideration.
Courage (Kia Māia) - Being brave to face the challenges in front of you.

In each pillar there are 3 places where these values can be applied. (All Settings, Learning Spaces and Digital Spaces.) There are also PB4L posters across the school giving students examples of how they could show the values in that place.

Integrity: Integrity is all about striving to do your best, being accountable for your actions, being organised and following the school rules even when no one’s looking. When learning, Integrity looks like participating in activities and your learning, being organised and ready to learn, and following basic digital citizenship rules and crediting our research and information online.

Respect: Respect is where you consider others opinions, treat everyone equally and respect their personal space and boundaries. It also includes using equipment with care (especially when it’s not yours). When learning, Respect looks like actively listening to the peers and staff around you and maintaining a safe and clean environment. When you’re online, you are aware about how your words and actions could affect others.

Courage: Courage is when you are eager to face and embrace the challenges in front of you, being able to ask for help without feeling guilty for doing so, and being an upstander. In a learning environment, it consists of asking questions and taking on feedback with an open mind and telling the truth even if it’s difficult to. When you’re online, you share your concerns with a trusted adult.

Students have been educated on the importance of the values above and why they should follow them. Students were given the opportunity to participate in themed PB4L activities like silent ball, poster competitions, and things similar. All of these activities correlate to a PB4L value. For example: in week 8, our activities related to respect for people on the neurodiverse spectrum.

Students also had a two-hour session when PB4L was introduced to explain the basics of what PB4L was all about and the matrix; which is the sheet of all the PB4L expectations we’ve mentioned previously. (You can find the PB4L Matrix below). Students who actively participated in the activities had a chance to earn a prize of their choice – from Jibbitz to multi-colour pencils.

Whanau Class Teachers also nominate two members of their Whanau Class who displayed the PB4L values during this time and they’re entered in a prize draw to win a prize at the end of the week. The PB4L student team (more below) can also bestow student nominations for a chance to win a prize in the draw we’ve mentioned previously.

At the start of the year, some students decided they wanted to participate in the operations of PB4L and contribute. The student team consists of 30 students from all across wanting to help and contribute. The Student Team has been working hard to organise a breakfast for the Top 20 students with the most PB4L stars, also known as Positive Kmars.
