Production Reflection

Sharon Johnston —

We asked a few students how they felt about the performance

Olivia Bamber
After weeks of preparation, anticipation and perspiration the big day of the school production finally arrived. All students and teachers had worked extremely hard to get ready for the big day, and it was finally here. All the hard work was paying off and backstage at the gaiety was filled with whispers, nerves, and excitement. All the kids were anxious but eager to get onto the stage and perform for their family and community. Both shows were filled with supportive and excited people ready to see the performance. Once the curtains opened the nerves turned to pure excitement and fun! All of the performances were amazing, even the teachers did well. Thank you so much everyone who came to watch and support and those who had been supporting with making this production possible!! Everyone at school is so grateful for them coming to support.

If anyone would like to see it again the video will be played at Ethels cinema, tickets for the showing are available at the school office. Tickets are $5

1980s Production 2024

From my point of view, when I was performing up stage I really felt nervous. I didn’t feel like I practiced well enough because I was really unwell and sick during production week, and missed 3 days of rehearsals/practice.  I was memorising my lines still at home and I came at the 4th day for practice.

At the night of the production I was feeling very nervous as they put the microphone on my head, even though I was unwell I still showed, I was a big part of the Year 10s production and I didn’t want to mess it up and ruin it for everyone.  I had plenty of lines on our production but it didn't stop me from performing well.   I was nervous doing the performance but I did the best I could.

When I was on stage it was nerve-racking because its my first time performing in a long time, and I have never performed infront of that many people before.  I just performed the absolute best I could. The people in the crowd were laughing, and cheering and some people thought I was a natural or a star and also a lot of people gave me good remarks about my performance on stage, and it made me feel great. The performance ended up really good and I think I did very well at the night.

Caden - Year 10

By Flora, Hazel, Charlotte and Hayley

At the Gaiety Theatre on the 4th of July, Akaroa Area School performed a production of eras of dance. The first performance was the Year 9s doing the dazzling 1920s with the iconic charleston, waltz, and chair dance. All the outfits were stunning and the script was very well done.

The second performance of the night was Pohatu and they did the 1950s aka the decade of milkshakes! Their outfits were so stunning and their hair looked fabulous.

After that was Onuku doing the 1960s! Which had Tigger as the amazing Chubby Checker who blew us all away with the twist.  Next was The Jackson 5 who sang and danced to “I Want You Back”. The Chordettes were all so gorgeous doing the lollipop dance. Fnally, we had the Beatles where everyone got together and finished it off.

Next up was the 70s with Years 7&8 which had the astonishing Kiss and Ministry of Silly Walks. The Ministry of Silly Walks came out doing the John Cleese silly walk off Monty Python. Kiss did their lip sync to “I Was Made For Loving You” and then Carl Douglas walked out with a group of kung fu fighters and fought Kiss. Two doctors ran out to help the wounded kung fu fighters then they danced to Staying Alive!

“ September” was the last song of the 70s!

The Year 10s decade was the 80s. The whole stage filled up with fog then Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey walked on stage to rehearse in a graveyard. Rick Astley came shortly after, then Patea Maori Club did Poi E.  To finish the ‘80s a bunch of zombies did “Thriller” by Michael Jackson.

Next was 90s! Done by the 11s and 12s the flawless Spice Girls walked on stage and danced to “Stop”. The Backstreet Boys came and did a Sick Dance to “Everbody”. They all joined together to do “S CLUB”!

Last but not least was the 2000s performed by the Year 13s. They did a cool mashup with a lot of popular songs from the 00s, my favorite was probably “Hips Don't Lie”. It was so funny and so well done.

The whole school finished off with “The Time Warp”. It sure was a blast from the past!

Junior school reflection

Taylor Johns

“My family were amazed at how good we were. Our class practiced a lot and everyone was dedicated. I also loved watching the year 13’s especially when they threw their cowboy hats into the crowd.”

Harry Mangels

“It was pretty fun. It was good to perform in front of people because I have never done it before. It would be really fun to do another production. Next time a production with more talking roles.”

Romeo Rihari

“I loved being Michael Jackson, I watched Michael sing his song and I decided to actually sing for real. My favourite act was the 2000’s, the M&M song was awesome especially when Michael did the flip. My brother Ricky loved being a woman onstage”.

Alice Holpey

“I loved getting my make up done, I felt like I was in a real show. The year 7 & 8’s Kung Fu Fighting dance was so cool.”

Louie Weber

“The Kiss show was my favourite because they played the electric guitar. I felt really happy when I did my Rock n Roll dance with my class.”

Bobby Thin

“I liked watching the big kids do their dances. Kiss was my favourite because the smoke made the stage look cool. Being on the stage was really fun.”
