Why Choose Akaroa Area School

Charlotte Helps —

We offer a tailored experience for international students in beautiful Akaroa.

Our school offers a wonderful and unique experience for international students. With a small roll, it is easy to get to know your classmates and develop strong friendships. You will also get to know your teachers, and the small class size means that you will be provided with individual help with your classwork.

The school has strong connections with our local environment, and especially the ocean. The school has kayaks, surfboards, paddle boards and yachts available for student use and the school conducts many classes based around and on Akaroa harbour and nearby bays.

We also have a strong environmental programme for students throughout the school, from year 1 to year 13. Students are involved in running our long-term reforestation of the Hammond Point reserve Hammond Point Reserve Reforestation Project

and we work alongside locals planting native trees at the Akaroa Heritage Park.

Senior students are able to undertake work experience with our local Department of Conservation and work with Pest Free Banks Peninsula. Junior students, our 'eco warriors', have gardens at school and take part in community environmental initiatives.

The wide and varied skills within our local community provide a range of opportunities for our students, and for international students who would like to experience different occupations. We can provide work experience in environmental work, on the land and water, hospitality and tourism, construction, farming, aquaculture, art and many others. These experiences can be tailored to your interests and will take place alongside your classwork.

If you want the experience of being in a small, friendly, family-style school, situated in one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand, then we believe you will love your time with us.
