Caring for the chickens

Isaac Oates and Amber Stanley —

Isaac and Amber tell us all about how they look after the school chickens

At Amberley School we have 5 chickens. They are brown shavers. They are called Nugget, Queen Bee, Clucksy, Gem and White Diamond.

Every morning before school (and again at Morning Tea) we check the eggs. They are very fast layers. We sometimes get a lot - once we got 13 in one day. Most days we get 4-5.

We put the eggs in the staff room, and the staff buy them. We use the money to buy more chicken food, and any extra gets used for Rainbow Reading Books.

We also have to make sure they are healthy. Isaac checks them while Amber holds them. Isaac is the poop boy - he cleans the chicken poo. We put the poo in the bucket, then it goes in the compost.

We sometimes give them a bath. Gem likes a bath, but the others don't. We make sure they have fresh water each day.

They eat pellets, silver beet and school scraps. The chickens get the weeds from the garden to eat too.

When we are feeling sad, we go and see the chickens to give them a hug. Sometimes for fun, the chickens like to try to fly. As you can see from the picture, they like to sit on our heads too.

The best thing about having chickens at school is that they give us company. We learn lots about them too!
