Rain in a Jar

Suzi Maddren —

We joined with our buddy class and made 'clouds' in a jar to learn about saturation and what happens when it rains...

It was so much fun working with our buddies and using  scientific equipment to learn more about rain.

We each brought in a jar and filled it nearly to to the top with water. The teachers then added a layer of shaving foam to represent a 'cloud' in the atmosphere. Using coloured water from a test tube and a pipette, we added water to the 'cloud', drop by drop, waiting until the cloud was completely saturated. When this happened, the 'cloud' then released it's coloured water into the clear water and created the most beautiful rain patterns in our jars.

Mrs Heeman and I were blown away by the rich learning we saw taking place; from using the equipment and new vocabulary to questioning and discussing what was happening and why. It was wonderful to hear the children exclaiming over the results and talking to each other about what would have happened if they'd used less foam or a different liquid... science in action!
