Harakeke - flax weaving and connecting. Shelbie shares her reflection on this process.......
On Wednesday the 8th of May Room 10 made precious harakeke baskets.
You may not know what harakeke is but let me explain, harakeke is a type of plant called flax.
We learnt how to harvest correctly and all about the tikanga and protocol, including where to cut the harakeke.
After we learnt how to harvest the harakeke we learnt to weave it altogether.
The process is quite a few steps and we are going to teach you this term how to weave.
You generally gift your harakeke after you have finished this.
I would like to gift mine to Mum
This is what they look like finished…… show them in assembly. We have already started to teach some of the other children and our buddies.
