Keeping Safe at Amberley School

Simon Green —

For Road Safety Week, Korimako had a very important message for the school at assembly on Friday.

Safety on our Roads

In my role as Principal, I am regularly contacted by members of the public about children seen out and about in our community wearing Amberley School Uniform. The most common concern? Children seen acting in an unsafe manner on our roads. I get on average one call or email a week.

I have made mention of this in previous newsletters, and we promote safety often at school. It is frustrating (and quite frightening) to me to find that I still get these messages from the community frequently. One of our children was nearly hit last week (not looking before he crossed the road). The message given at assembly was clear:

Find a safe place to cross. (Not Lawcocks Road)

Stop just before you get to the kerb

Look all around for traffic...

and listen

If traffic is coming let it pass

But only if you have an adult supervising you or are over 8 years old.

Brake recommends under 8's should not cross roads without an adult.

Why should under 8’s not cross roads without an adult?

  • They have difficulty judging speed and distance

  • They have difficulty understanding danger

  • They are small (so can't see hazards) and are still developing eyesight and hearing;

  • They are carefree, not careless;

An older brother or sister is not an adult and it is unfair to place this responsibility on their shoulders. Please consider the messages above when your children travel to and from school.

Please also refrain from parking on the south side of Lawcocks Rd (Railway Tavern side) - this is a high risk area for our children before and after school.

Thanks for your ongoing support - we all want to keep our children safe.
