Aaron Orangi, a former Olympian visits our school

Trina Shepherd —

On Monday the 22nd of August I am sure most of you saw the bobsled outside the Arahura. A former Olympian Aaron Orangi visited Amberley school to talk us Amberley kids about his life time and how he got into the Winter Olympics participating in bobsledding.

He told us about his life. In the bobsled he was the brake man which to be the brake man you have to be a fast runner, a heavy build and be quite coordinated to jump in the sled .His lifelong dream was to be a chemist and help people get better. When he was talking to his friend a trainer he said “I have to train an olympian so he choose him” he thought that bobsledding would be for him and it was, he sold all of his belongings to pay for his trip to Europe. As a child he had a dream to run the 100m sprints at the Olympics.

He informed everyone about the dangers in bobsledding. Aaron’s bobsled team did get into race but on their 5th practise run the driver of their four man bobsled broke a rib as their bobsled overturned on the day before the race and they weren't allowed to compete in the race.

They were very disappointed they couldn't participate in the race but got over it with free McDonald's - this was available for all athletes at the village.

Everyone learned a lot from his inspiring stories about his adventure to the Olympics and amazing facts on bob sledding.

We wish him all the best with his Chemist and Pharmacy.

Make sure you say hi to him if you pass the Darfield Pharmacy.
