Wonder 💫
A few AWESOME tamariki have chosen to share their Writing in response to the movie 'Wonder'.
Nearing the end of last term, our literacy group delved into a film study on the movie 'Wonder'. This challenged the students to think critically, empathetically but also to think from a perspective that wasn't their own. This task allowed the tamariki to learn about different styles of writing, with most choosing diary entries or letter writing.
As a kaiako, reading these responses filled me with such pride just knowing the way our tamariki related to this context and were able to encapsulate their emotions through text.

Today we are going on the nature reserve trip when we got there and unpacked our bags, they put on a movie, when we got our popcorn and sat down. Then they said the movie was The Wizard of Oz. So I said to Auggie do you want to go outside into the forest?'' We had been out there for a few minutes then I said I needed to go pee. So I did my thing then Auggie said he had to go and pee too. After that these 7th graders came over and Auggie turned around and they screamed!!! Then one of them called Auggie an oark, another called him Golyam. I told him to stop but they shoved me.
Auggie said leave him alone then some other
kids from our school came over, they were Amos and his friends. They asked what was happening then the 7th graders tried to fight him and Amos punched him in the face. Auggie and I ran and ran. Once we got out of the forest Amos and his friends caught up. We all started skimming rocks. Later that night there were fireworks, they looked awesome. The next day it was time to go home.
A couple of days after we got home there was the school graduation. Auggie and everyone was there. After the choir, it was time for the best award. Guess who won? AUGGIE!

I have a little brother named August. On my fourth birthday I wished for a little brother but he isn't what people would think of as a normal brother. He is on the inside but not the outside.
He has had 27 surgeries but none of them have made him look completely normal. Everyone thinks that what he looks like is what he is but he's not that. We need to stop unnecessary bullying now.
I see kids being bullied for their looks everyday and when I see that I think of my brother. I need everybody to realize what they're doing to Auggie, a boy with a normal brain and a not so normal body is not okay.
We also need to remember that August isn't just my brother he is a human being who deserves as much respect as everyone else.

Dear Diary
Today was my first day at Beecher Prep School I was able to look around and meet some people.
There were three kids that showed me around one was Jack Will, Charlotte, and Julian. I liked it, just Julian was a bit mean. The next day of school I was nervous!! Everyone stared at me when I walked in the corridor.
My teacher was really nice and made me feel safe. Julian, Charlotte was in my class. Charlotte was not next to me but 1 seat away, so was Jack Will. Julian made me feel left out by saying you look like Palpatine with the braid at the back of my head.
Mr Tushman my principal was really kind to me, I like him a lot.
The science lab and cafeteria are my favourite.
Signed,
Auggie.
