What's happening in Term 4?

Eilis Cassidy —

Term 4 promises to be a busy, active term with lots of sports taking place. First up is Senior Athletics Day on Tuesday 17th October.

Year 3-6

Nairnville is the venue for this year's senior athletics where tamariki will get the chance to participate and showcase their developing skills in many different disciplines. There is an opportunity for tamariki to qualify for the Northern Zone Athletics event if they achieve the qualification distance/time.

Children are welcome to come to school on Tuesday of Week 2 in their sportswear where they will then travel by bus to the venue in their hubs. We encourage everyone to wear suitable, comfortable clothing and footwear.

Please ensure your child has:

  • plenty of food for lunch and a water bottle

  • sunblock (if they require special sunblock)

  • school sunhat and fleece

  • appropriate running clothes and footwear (bare feet are also fine)

  • warm clothing and wet weather gear

Students will be competing in a number of events from around 9:45am to 2:15pm. These events include sprinting, long jump, high jump, vortex and quoits. We hope to include the 800m race plus the new addition of relay races to end the day. View the timetable by clicking here.

We ask students to be at school from 8:45 am on Tuesday morning. This will give teachers time to ensure students have signed in, applied sunblock and are organised into bus groups. The buses will leave school at 9:15am and return at 2:40pm.

As athletics day is part of our school sports programme, all students are expected to participate unless injured. We wish everyone an enjoyable day and fingers crossed for some sunshine!

Lunchtime sports options for our tamariki.

Gaelic Football

Eilís will run a series of drills and games to teach the fundamentals of Gaelic Football on Thursdays in term 4 starting in week 2. For comparison, its closest relative on this side of the world is AFL.

This popular Irish sport consists of a combination of skills including carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). Come along and give it a go! Open to Y3-6. Meet Eilís on the lower pitch Thursdays from 1:10pm.

Indoor Sports with Rupert

Wednesday lunchtime is another chance for our tamariki to take part in a range of different sports in the hall. Rupert will begin the series with Cricket and the tamariki can choose what they would like to do on a week-to-week basis. These structured sessions are open to everyone from years 1-6. Meet Rupert in the hall for 1:10pm on Wednesdays.

SmashPlay Cricket

We are delighted to host Cricket Wellington on Thursday 19th October for their in-school programme at Amesbury.

Smash Play is a programme to introduce our tamariki to cricket through fundamental movement skills and game play. The programme will be delivered by the Community Cricket Ambassadors for tamariki in years 3-6.

This is a good lead into the junior club cricket season, providing participants a pathway to join their local club. For more information on SmashPlay click here. The programme will be delivered indoors if the weather is not in our favour.

Warm regards,

Eilís (Sports Coordinator)
