He waka eke noa - A canoe which we are all in with no exception.
This whakataukī (proverb) describes Koru Hub ākonga (learners) and ngā kaiako (teachers) beautifully. It speaks about the need to work together, regardless of who we are or where we come from.
ASB sports and Number Talks are the highlights for ngā ākonga (learners) this term.
ASB
We have been busy getting our steps up at ASB this term. Ngā ākonga has enjoyed the four options at ASB: Athletics, Futsal, Dodgeball and Gymnastics. We have an energetic rōpū (group) so these sessions were timely considering the weather this term.
Here is what ngā ākonga had to say, in their own words:
# Griffin - I loved dodgeball because you get to dodge the ball.
# Callan - I loved futsal because I got to score a goal.
# Alicia - I loved gymnastics because I got to do handstands.
# Amy - I loved gymnastics because it makes you do cartwheels.
Number Talks
In Koru Hub we have been focussing on Number Talks. Number Talks is a short, powerful tool for helping students develop computational fluency because the expectation is that they will use number relationships and the structures of numbers to add, subtract, multiply and divide. We spend approximately 15 minutes on Number Talks, each session.
A mathematical problem is presented to ākonga, who are then given "thinking time" to reflect on it on their own and "pair share" time to discuss it with a partner before sharing it with the larger group.

Here is what ngā ākonga had to say, in their own words:
# Group 1 said: We see 16 because we counted all the dots starting from 4 eg 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13,14, 15, 16.
# Group 2 said: We see 16 because we counted all the 4s: 4, 8 then put the two 2s together which is another 4 so now we have 12. We have the 3 & 1 which is another 4 so after 12 goes 16.
# Group 3 said: We see 16 because we counted in 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 then 1 more to get to 13, then 3 more to get to 16.
