Poetry Writing competition for year 1-6 students

Urs Cunningham —

Introducing our inaugural Churton Park Poetry Writing Competition...open to all year 1-6 students from Churton Park School and Amesbury School.

We know that we have many creative writers in our local community, and we would like to create an opportunity for ākonga who love poetry to connect and share with other like minded tamariki.

The competition calls for tamariki to write a poem in any style at all about any subject that interests them. All poems need to be submitted by 5pm on Wednesday 26th October (second week of term 4). Poems will be judged in three categories: year 1-2, year 3-4, and year 5-6. There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each year group category, and all place getters will also receive a $20 Whitcoulls voucher. A share and celebrate event will be held in Kea Hall at the Churton Park Community Centre on Friday 11th November from 5:45 - 6:45pm, to announce the winners and to share some of the fabulous poetry submitted.

To express interest in entering, or to ask any questions about the competition, please email poetry@amesbury.school.nz. To register for the competition, please fill in this short registration form

If your tamariki would like a bit of help getting started with their poem, we are offering a free workshop for any children who will be entering the poetry competition. The workshop will run from 9am - 12pm on Friday 7th October (first week of the school holiday break) at Amesbury School.

So, if your child loves writing and poetry, and enjoys the chance to share their writing with others, this is a fabulous opportunity for them. It is also a good way for ākonga who have a shared interest to connect both within and across the two schools.

Ngā mihi,

Urs Cunningham and Maneesha Fonseka
